HIRAM, Ohio (pacathletics.org) - Grove City College won its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Volleyball championship since 2001 with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-23) victory over Hiram College in the PAC Tournament title match Saturday night, which was played at Hiram's Price Gymnasium.
The Wolverines (20-8) entered the Tournament as the fourth-seed out of the North Division and went on the road to defeat Washington & Jefferson in the quarterfinals, Thiel in the semifinals and the Tournament's overall top seed Hiram in the final to win its 10th PAC championship, most in conference history.
The balanced Grove City attack had just one player with double-digit kills, but six Wolverines finished with three or more. Junior Alayna Dorst (Middletown, Del./Middletown) posted a team-leading 10 on the night, with six coming in the first set to help propel Grove City to an early lead. Dorst also brought up 18 digs, passed out four assists and would be selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament following the match.
Also posting big nights for the Wolverines was junior Sarah Hart (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) with nine kills and one solo block, while senior Lila Stonehouse (Hatboro, Pa./Abington) put down eight kills and had three blocks. Junior Kendra Klusch (Alliance, Ohio/Homeschooled) hit .308 in the win with six kills on just 13 swings while also recording five blocks (one solo/four assisted) at the net.
Setting up the offense was sophomore Brooke Manfull (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and junior Sarah Harris (Lebanon, Ohio/Mars Hill) with 14 and 13 assists, respectively. Harris made it a double-double with 16 digs.
In addition to Dorst, Hart and Klusch were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Leading Hiram in the match was freshman Sofia Smotek (Independence, Ohiho/Independence) with 11 kills, followed by junior Morgan Tomblin (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) with 10 kills. Senior setter Kelly Hoffman (Streetsboro, Ohio/Crestwood) passed out 33 assists and totaled 24 digs, followed by senior Brooke Fishback (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) with 19 digs and both, along with Tomblin, were named to the All-Tournament Team as well.
Grove City will find out Monday afternoon who they will play in the NCAA Tournament when selections are announced at 1 pm. It will be the first NCAA appearance for the Wolverines since 1986.
