TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Top seed Grove City College rolled to a big win, while No. 2 Chatham University pulled out a last-second victory in the semifinals for the second year in a row, as the two teams advanced to the championship game in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
The Wolverines (15-3) raced out to a 10-goal lead by halftime and didn't look back in securing a 17-4 victory over fourth-seeded Westminster College. That puts Grove City in the championship game for the second consecutive year against Chatham (13-3).
The Cougars, who reached last year's final with a goal in the closing seconds to beat Washington & Jefferson College in the semifinals, did it again Thursday, using a goal with one second to play to edge the Presidents, 13-12.
Saturday's PAC Championship game at Grove City will start at 1 pm. The PAC Sports Network will have the free-to-view broadcast of the women's final.
The winner of the PAC Championship Tournament will earn the league's automatic-qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The field for this year's Division III Championship will be announced Monday, May 4th, with first and second round games scheduled for May 9-11.
PAC Semifinal 1 - Grove City, Pa.
No. 1 Grove City 17, No. 4 Westminster 4
- The Wolverines used a fast start and balanced scoring to earn a 17-4 win over Westminster on Wednesday at Don Lyle Field.
- Grove City opened the game with a 6-0 run and led 12-2 at halftime, controlling possession throughout.
- The Wolverines placed eight different players in the scoring column, led by senior Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), freshman Avery Anderson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), junior Gwen Shilling (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and sophomore Mia Mygatt (Silver Spring, Md./Brookewood) with three goals apiece.
- Rowell added three assists to finish with six points, while junior Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) added six points (2g/4a) to pace the offense.
- The Wolverine defense forced 20 Westminster turnovers, with five of those forced by senior Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes), who also scooped four ground balls.
- Leading Grove City on the ground ball front was Stevenson with six, while freshman Sophia Happel (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton Wenham Regional) picked up five.
- Wolverine senior goalie Mia Gallagher (Mogadore, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) stopped five shots in the win.
- Westminster (10-8) was led by senior Julia Ravazza (Twain Harte, Calif./Dublin) with two goals, while senior Chloe Courinos (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) and senior Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) each added a goal.
PAC Semifinal 2 - Pittsburgh, Pa.
No. 2 Chatham 13, No. 3 W&J 12
- Chatham scored with one second remaining to secure a 13-12 win over W&J.
- The Presidents (10-6) broke a 6-6 halftime tie to lead 10-8 going into the fourth quarter behind four goals from senior Mya Bolinda (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills)
- Chatham responded with a fourth-quarter surge, scoring four straight, including three in a span of 38 seconds, to take a 12-10 lead with five minutes left.
- The last two goals of that Cougar run were scored by freshman Bella Walski-Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas/Antonian College Prep).
- The Presidents tied the game at 12-12 with three minutes to play following scores by senior Caleigh Bogats (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and junior Ella Holland (Healdsburg, Calif./Cardinal Newman).
- Last year, Chatham used a goal by Tessa Hueber with two seconds to play to edge W&J 12-11 and advance to the title game.
- This year, freshman Sofia Hoetzlein-Sirman (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) delivered the game-winner with only one second remaining to punch Chatham's ticket to the final.
- Chatham was led by Walski-Rodriguez with four goals, while Hoetzlein-Sirman and freshman Campbell Murphy (Saline, Mich./Saline) each had two goals and one assist.
- Hoetzlein-Sirman also posted five ground balls and four caused turnovers while freshman Marcella Valentine (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) picked up seven ground balls to go along with two goals.
- For W&J, Bolinda finished with four goals, while Holland added three. Bogats also totaled five points (2g/3a) and sophomore Avery Byard (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and freshman Bekah Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) each added a goal and an assist.
PAC Championship Game Notes
- Grove City is in the championship game for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five seasons.
- The Wolverines repeated as PAC champions with an 11-7 victory over Chatham in the 2025 title game.
- Chatham led 4-1 after the first quarter and 7-5 late in the second quarter, but the Wolverines scored the game's final six goals to claim the win.
- Shilling led Grove City's offense with three goals, while Jess Robinette (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) scored twice as part of a four-point game.
- In their regular season meeting this year on April 1, Grove City limited the Cougars to just one goal over the final three quarters in a 9-3 victory.
- Robinette logged four goals in that win. For Chatham, junior Rachel Luomala (Fowlerville, Mich./St. Catherine) had two of their three scores.
- A win would give Grove City three PAC crowns to match W&J for most by a conference program. Chatham is trying to win its first PAC championship.
