WASHINGTON, Pa. (pacathletics.org) – Two Washington & Jefferson College baseball players have been selected to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week, as announced by the organization on Wednesday (April 29). Senior Luke Alvarez (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) was chosen as the Catcher of the Week, and junior Brendan Cruz (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) was selected as one of the Starting Pitchers of the Week.
Alvarez continued his torrid month of April with another strong week. The senior catcher compiled a .474 batting average (9-for-19), a .545 on-base percentage and a 1.263 slugging percentage during a five-game week for the Presidents. Alvarez collected 12 RBI, scored eight runs and slugged five home runs during the week, including two homers in both games of W&J's sweep of Franciscan on April 22nd.
Cruz put together a near flawless week on the mound. The Presidents' junior right hander tossed nine scoreless innings last week. Cruz worked eight shutout innings and flirted with a no-hit bid in a 3-0 shutout victory over Chatham on Saturday. During the outing, Cruz carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning before an infield hit broke it up in the win over the Cougars. Cruz struck out four and did not issue a walk as he moved his record to 8-0 on the season. Cruz also tossed a scoreless inning of relief Thursday in a relief outing against nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace.
D3baseball.com's national Team of the Week has now featured PAC players in four consecutive weeks and this is third time this year W&J players have been honored.
