TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Top-seed Allegheny College and second-seed Grove City College held serve in Thursday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Tennis Tournament semifinals, with both securing 4-0 victories to advance to the PAC Championship Match.
Allegheny's win over No. 5 Washington & Jefferson College (6-12) and Grove City's victory over No. 3 Franciscan (8-14) puts the three-time defending champion Gators and 29-time champion Wolverines in the tournament final for the fourth year in a row. The PAC Tournament Championship match is currently scheduled for Saturday, April 25th at 1 pm at Allegheny's Robertson Tennis Center.
The winner of the PAC Championship Tournament earns the conference's automatic-qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
PAC Semifinal 1 - Meadville, Pa.
No. 1 Allegheny 4, No. 5 W&J 0
- The Gators quickly secured the doubles point with 6-0 decisions in the top two flights. Freshman Adam Memije (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and senior Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) clinched the point with their shutout at second doubles.
- Allegheny worked nearly as quickly in singles play, getting to a 3-0 lead following 6-0, 6-0 wins by Memije at No. 1 and junior Javier Bejarano (El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain/IES Padre Luis Coloma) at No. 4.
- The clinching point came at No. 5, where sophomore Olivier Erkens (Gouda, Netherlands/Coornhert Gymnasium) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner and clinched Allegheny's return trip to the final.
PAC Semifinal 2 - Grove City, Pa.
No. 2 Grove City 4, No. 3 Franciscan 0
- With matching 6-2 scores at second and third doubles, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead. The No. 3 tandem of junior Eric Jordan (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore Garrett Ranney (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) earned one of those wins which staked Grove City to the early advantage.
- A trio of straight-set wins in singles pushed the Wolverines over the finish line. The first win came at sixth singles by senior Wesley Morgan (Loganville, Ga./Homeschooled), 6-1, 6-0.
- Senior Isaac DeMan (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and sophomore Ryan Kirkpatrick (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine), who picked up a 6-2 win at second doubles, were double winners on the day. DeMan scored a 6-1, 6-4 decision at third singles and Kirkpatrick nearly matched his teammate when he claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4.
PAC Championship Match Notes
- Allegheny improved to 16-7 this year with Thursday's semifinal win, the Gators fourth consecutive year with 16 or more wins.
- Since rejoining the PAC in the 2022-23 academic year, Allegheny has not lost to a PAC team, rolling up a 39-match winning streak in regular season and tournament play against conference opponents.
- That streak includes a 7-0 triumph over Grove City in this year's regular season meeting on April 11th in Meadville.
- The Gators are playing for their fourth consecutive PAC title and eighth overall.
- Grove City's record went to 9-4 this year with Thursday's semifinal victory, the Wolverines' sixth consecutive year with at least nine wins.
- Grove City has reached the PAC Championship match all seven years since the conference implemented a team championship bracket format.
- The Wolverines are playing for their 30th PAC crown overall and first since 2022.
