TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - With four all-conference runners returning after the program's top finish ever since coming into the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), Geneva College was voted first in the league's men's cross country preseason poll. Voted on by the conference's 12 head coaches, the poll was released Wednesday, along with the PAC's Runners to Watch List.
The Golden Tornadoes, who finished second at last year's championships for their best showing since joining the PAC in 2011, secured five first-place votes and 112 points to earn the top position in the poll, beating out defending champion Franciscan University, among others. Geneva had five earn All-PAC last year and bring back four of those runners, including a Second Team All-PAC performer in senior Tommy Corbin and three Honorable Mention runners in sophomore Ethan Haring and seniors Eli Eisenberger and Karter Reath. Haring, with his 16th place finish, earned the PAC Newcomer of the Year in 2024 as the highest finishing first-year runner.
The strong showing by Geneva (68) left them a point short of Franciscan (67) for the title a year ago, as the Barons won their fourth PAC crown in five years. Franciscan, led by Coach of the Year Dr. Dan Kuebler, placed four runners in the top 17 to edge out Geneva, as well as Saint Vincent College (70), Washington & Jefferson College (75) and Grove City College (77) in a tightly packed final standings.
Following Geneva in this year's polling was another narrow spread between the next five teams. Grove City, with one first-place vote and 98 points, came in second, while Franciscan took third with a trio of top votes and 96 points. Sitting in fourth with 94 points and two first-place votes was Allegheny College, followed by W&J in fifth with 87 points and Saint Vincent with the final first-place vote and 85 points.
Completing this season's poll was Waynesburg University in seventh with 56 points, followed by Hiram College in eighth (49), Westminster College in ninth (47), Chatham University in 10th (29), Bethany College (20) and Thiel College (19).
This year's polling included Hiram, who joins the PAC in all sports this year after coming over from the North Coast Athletic Conference. A member of the PAC from 1971-89, this will be the Terriers' first year running in the PAC since the fall of 1988, as the Terriers placed fourth out of five teams that season.
A total of 10 returning All-PAC performers from 2024 will be back on the course this year, including three who made First Team All-PAC, two from the Second Team All-PAC list and five Honorable Mention All-PAC. The top returning finisher from 2024 is W&J junior Dominic Flitcraft, who placed third. It was the second consecutive First Team All-PAC honor for Flitcraft, who was the conference runner-up in 2023 as he earned PAC Newcomer of the Year. Following his all-conference effort last year, Flitcraft would qualify for NCAA Championships after placing 10th at the Mid-Atlantic Regional meet and then was the top finisher of four PAC national qualifiers, placing 131st overall at NCAAs.
Two other First Team All-PAC runners from last year will lead their teams again this fall, including Franciscan senior Andrew Madigan and Grove City senior Michael Singley. Madigan was the top finisher for the Barons in their championship effort, as he crossed in sixth place for the initial all-conference award in his career. Coming in one spot behind him was Singley, whose seventh-place crossing was two spots higher than when he earned Second Team All-PAC in 2023 after taking ninth overall.
The Runners to Watch list also includes eight members of the Fall 2024 PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes on varsity sports teams who earned a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale during their semester of competition.
The 2025 PAC Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 1st at Allegheny in Meadville, Pa.. The men's 8,000-meter race will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the women's 6,000-meter race at 12 p.m.
The Division III regional championships are scheduled for Saturday, November 15th. Bethany, Chatham, Geneva, Grove City, Saint Vincent, Thiel, W&J, Waynesburg and Westminster will compete in the Mid-Atlantic region, while Allegheny and Franciscan will compete in the Great Lakes region. The Division III Mid-Atlantic Championships will be hosted by Dickinson College in Newville, Pa., while the Division III Great Lakes Championships will be held in Louisville, Kentucky at E.P. Sawyer State Park.
The 2025 Division III Championships are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22nd and will be hosted by Converse University and OneSpartanburg, Inc., in Spartanburg, S.C.
