WEXFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Top-seeded Allegheny College captured the 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Tennis championship with a 5-1 victory over Grove City College in the Tournament final, which was held at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pa.

The PAC title is the fifth in program history for the Gators and first since 1982. Before the Gators departed the PAC for the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), they won three consecutive PAC championships from 1980-82.

Allegheny (17-4) defeated the Wolverines 8-1 in their regular season meeting April 21 and this match had a similar start, with the Gators winning two of three in doubles competition with wins at first and second doubles.

In singles play, sophomore Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) was the first off the court with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 1. That was followed by senior Adam Shinomiya (Portland, Ore./International School of Beaverton) extending Allegheny's lead to 4-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position. The clinching point came when sophomore Will Jarvie (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) won his match at No. 5 by a 6-2, 6-1 final score.

Following the match, Hedlund was named the PAC Championship Tournament's Most Outstanding Player and he was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Ethan Carr (King of Prussia, Pa./Harriton) and Shinomiya.

For Grove City, who finished the season with a 13-6 record, freshman Benjamin Jones (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) and senior Adam Scharnagl (Hinesville, Ga./Badwell) earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.

Allegheny receives the conference's automatic-qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. Team selections for the Division III Championships will be announced on Monday, May 1 with first-, second- and third-round matches slated for Friday-Sunday, May 5-7. NCAA Team Quarterfinals are set for May 13, Semifinals will be May 15 and the Team Finals are May 16.
