Grove City nets PAC men's tennis title

WASHINGTON, Pa. (pacathletics.org)--Top-seeded Grove City College secured a 5-1 decision over No. 3 Saint Vincent College Saturday afternoon in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Tennis Championship Tournament title match. 

It is Grove City's PAC-best 29th men's tennis title. 

Saturday's championship match utilized the nine-point team format with matches played to decision (first team to 5 individual match wins). The match was hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at its on-campus Janet Swanson Tennis Center, which has served as the home site for the Presidents’ teams since 2015. The PAC Championship Tournament features a six-team championship bracket format. 

Grove City senior Karsten Lagerquist (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Fox Chapel) and junior Ryne Talko (Cresson, Pa. | Bishop Guilfoyle) earned an 8-6 win at No. 1 singles while the No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Jameson Sposato (Frewsburg, N.Y. | Frewsburg) sophomore Michael Odrey (New Kensington, Pa. | Valley) picked up an 8-6 victory. Sophomores Gavin Miller (Clayton, N.C. | Corinth Holders) and Josiah Newton (Claysville, Pa. | McGuffey) claimed an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. 

Sophomore Collier Kaufman (Lowell, Mich. | Lowell) won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles before Lagerquist ended the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. 

Senior Mauricio Sanchez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela | San Vicente de Paul) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles for Saint Vincent. 

Lagerquist was named the championship tournament's Most Outstanding Player for the second-straight year. 

As the winner of this year's PAC Championship Tournament, Grove City will receive the conference's automatic-qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The field for this year’s Division III Championship is scheduled to be announced Monday, May 9 with first, second and third rounds slated for Friday-Sunday, May 13-15.
