TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - After winning a combined seven championships and finishing second in nine other sports, Grove City College captured both the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's and Men's All-Sports Trophies for the third year in a row.
The all-sports trophies are annually awarded to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition. First-place finishes are worth 12 points, runner-up finishes are worth 11 points ... last place is worth one point.
The men's title for Grove City is their fourth consecutive and 16th overall in program history. In second place after the winter season, the Wolverines used a men's lacrosse title and three runner-up finishes in the spring to vault into first place.
For the Grove City women, they have now won three consecutive, four in the last five years and 22 all-time trophies. It was a wire-to-wire lead for the Wolverines, who led after the fall and winter before a lacrosse championship and one second place helped clinch their latest all-sports victory.
This also marks the 10th time Grove City has finished first in the women's and men's standings and the 12th time the same school has claimed both trophies in the last 37 years.
Men
By capturing the lacrosse crown and adding second places in tennis, outdoor track and field and baseball, Grove City amassed 64 points in the spring to finish with a record 127.5 points. It's the third straight year the Wolverines set a new standard in the all-sports standings, surpassing last year's total of 118. With PAC titles this year in soccer, swimming and diving and lacrosse to go with six runner-up placements, the Wolverines finished first or second in nine of the 13 PAC championship sports this year.
Washington & Jefferson College, who held a slim lead after the winter, added a baseball title to its football and basketball trophies and finished second overall with 113.5 points. Using third places in volleyball, tennis and lacrosse, Saint Vincent College placed third in the final standings with 106.5 points. Allegheny College, who scored spring championships in tennis and golf, earned fourth with 90.5 points, just ahead of Westminster College in fifth place with 89 points.
Geneva College, who won the outdoor track and field title to go along with wins in cross country and indoor track and field, finished sixth with 79.5 points. Taking seventh was Hiram College with 73.5 points, followed by Franciscan University in eighth (59), Bethany College in ninth (56), Thiel College, who won the PAC men's volleyball championship for the second straight year, in 10th (52), Chatham University in 11th (50) and Waynesburg University (44).
Women
Like the men, Grove City's women established a new record for overall point total. With a championship in lacrosse, second place in outdoor track & field and third place in golf, the Wolverines netted 38.5 points in the spring to finish with 113 total points. That eclipsed last year's count of 104.5. Grove City earned four championships through the year in soccer, volleyball, swimming and diving and lacrosse, as well as a trio of second places, putting the Wolverines in the top two in seven of the 11 championship sports sponsored by the PAC.
By winning the golf championship, W&J remained in second place in the final rankings with 97 points. The next three schools were separated by only 3.5 points, starting with Westminster, whose third straight softball crown helped the Titans total 87.5 points for third place. Fourth place went to Allegheny with 84.5 points, just a half-point in front of Saint Vincent with 84. Earning sixth with 76.5 points was Geneva, who similar to the men, added an outdoor track and field title to first places in cross country and indoor track and field.
Ranking seventh was Franciscan with 58 points, with Hiram finishing eighth with 54 and next was a tie for ninth place between Chatham and Waynesburg with 53 points each. Rounding out the women's standings was Bethany with 42 points and Thiel with 30.5.
