TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Following the completion of the winter sports championships, the Washington & Jefferson College men and Grove City College women lead their respective Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) All-Sports Trophy races.
The all-sports trophies are annually awarded to the schools which perform the best across the board in league competition. First-place finishes are worth 12 points, runner-up finishes are worth 11 points ... last place is worth one point.
W&J's men were in third after the fall but one conference title and two third places in the winter vaulted them into the top spot. On the women's side, Grove City's women used one winter conference title and one runner-up showing to increase their lead.
Men
Fueled by a PAC title in basketball and third-place finishes in swimming and diving and wrestling, W&J collected 40.5 points to move up two spots into first place with 67.5 points. Grove City was in first place following the fall and with a PAC crown in swimming and diving and second place in indoor track and field, the Wolverines remain in second place with 63.5 points.
Moving from fifth in the fall to third place following the winter is Saint Vincent. The Bearcats scored the second-highest point total in winter championships with 36.5, thanks to a PAC championship in wrestling and runner-up finish in swimming and diving, which gives SVC 58.5 total points.
Tied in fourth place with 46.5 points is Geneva College and Westminster College. Geneva's winter was highlighted by winning the PAC indoor track and field title. Westminster collected 29.5 points in the winter, highlighted by a second place in men's basketball and third place in indoor track and field.
Hiram College is just behind in sixth place with 43.5 points, with Allegheny College only a point back in seventh with 42.5. Franciscan University is in eighth place with 34.5 points, followed by Waynesburg University in ninth (28.5), Bethany College in 10th (28), Thiel College (20.5) and Chatham University (20).
Women
After winning soccer and volleyball championships to build an 8.5 point lead after the fall, Grove City captured the swimming and diving title in the winter. Added with a runner-up in indoor track and field and a tie for third in basketball, the Wolverines scored a PAC-high 32.5 points to increase their margin, as Grove City now has 74.5 points.
It's a tight three-team pack behind Grove City. W&J, aided by a repeat conference title in basketball, remains in second place with 60.5 points. Just behind the Presidents in third place is Allegheny with 58.5, while second-place finishes in basketball and swimming and diving helped Saint Vincent score 27 points and move into fourth place with 57.
The biggest move from the fall was Westminster, as third places in indoor track and field and swimming and diving jumped the Titans from eighth to fifth after the winter with 45.5 points. Geneva, off the strength of an indoor track and field championship, is a close sixth with 44.5 points, just in front of seventh-place Franciscan (44).
Completing the women's standings is Chatham in eighth with 37 points, followed by Waynesburg in ninth (35), Hiram in 10th (34), Bethany (22.5) and Thiel (17).
