TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Top seed Grove City College won on its home field, while No. 3 Saint Vincent College pulled off a road win in Wednesday’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Soccer Tournament semifinals, advancing the Wolverines and Bearcats to Saturday’s championship match.
Three-time defending champion Grove City (13-2-4) broke open a scoreless match at halftime with No. 5 Waynesburg University by scoring three times in the first 13 minutes of the second half and going on to a 3-1 over the Yellow Jackets (9-9-1).
In the evening semifinal, Saint Vincent (15-3-1) made a goal in the 14th minute stand, as SVC downed No. 2 Allegheny College (9-6-4) by a 1-0 score, putting the Bearcats in the PAC Championship game for the first time in program history.
Saturday’s PAC Championship will kick off at 4:30 pm in Grove City.
PAC Quarterfinal 1 – Grove City, Pa.
No. 1 Grove City 3, No. 5 Waynesburg 1
- The first half saw Grove City post an 11-8 advantage in shots, but Waynesburg senior goalkeeper Lex Greenlief (Chester, W.Va./Oak Glen) stopped six shots and Wolverine senior Maddie Mills (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) made two stops to keep the match scoreless.
- Grove City needed just 1:16 into the second half to score when senior Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) finished off an assist from freshman Ana Hahn (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) for a 1-0 Wolverine lead.
- In the 57th minute, Stevenson struck again, this time an unassisted goal for her 15th of year, to double the Grove City lead to 2-0.
- The margin was quickly built up to 3-0 just 1:07 later when Hahn scored on a rebound and the Wolverines were in control.
- Waynesburg kept their hopes alive with a late goal in the 87th minute by junior Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J./Gloucester County Institute of Technology) but it was the last shot on net for the game and Grove City punched their ticket to the title game.
- The Wolverines finished with a commanding 33-16 cushion in shots, including 16-5 on goal.
- Mills finished the night with four saves, while Greenlief logged 13 stops for the Yellow Jackets.
PAC Quarterfinal 2 - Meadville, Pa.
No. 3 Saint Vincent 1, No. 2 Allegheny 0
- The initial shot of the match came at 12:30 of the first half and the save led to a Saint Vincent corner.
- The ensuing SVC corner was delivered into the box by Bearcat senior Cori Bieber (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and senior Bella Meder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) got a touch to get it across the goal line for a 1-0 Saint Vincent lead at the 13:03 mark.
- Shots were hard to come by, as the teams combined for only five in the first half, three by Allegheny and two from Saint Vincent.
- Saint Vincent senior keeper Rilyn Warner (Granville, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) made a pair of saves in the opening half to keep it a 1-0 score going to halftime.
- Chances were difficult to generate in the second half as well as the rain continued to fall. Warner made her only save of the second half in the 56th minute.
- Allegheny was limited to just five shots in the second half, the final two coming in the 83rd and 85th minutes, but both were off target.
- Saint Vincent didn’t allow another shot and Warner closed out her 11th shutout of the year with three saves.
PAC Championship Notes
- The first meeting this season between Grove City and Saint Vincent ended in a 0-0 draw on Sept. 19 in Latrobe.
- That was the first result Saint Vincent earned against Grove City ever, as the Wolverines had won the previous 16 meetings.
- This will be the first PAC Tournament match-up between the programs.
- Grove City is seeking a fourth consecutive title and 11th overall. A Wolverine win would give the program six crowns since 2018.
- The last team to win four or more PAC Championships in a row was Thomas More, who captured seven straight between 2011-17.
- Wednesday was Saint Vincent’s first PAC semifinal win in three attempts to advance to the program’s first PAC Championship game.
- The Bearcats also tied the single-season program record for wins with 15, originally set last year.
