TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Third-seeded Saint Vincent College posted a comfortable home victory, while fifth-seeded Waynesburg University went on the road to pull out a win in Saturday's Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinal matches.
The triumph by Saint Vincent (14-3-1), a 5-0 decision over No. 6 Washington & Jefferson College (7-9-2), advances the Bearcats into the PAC semifinals Wednesday night when SVC will travel to No. 2 Allegheny College (9-5-4) for a 7 pm match.
Waynesburg's 1-0 shutout win at fourth-seeded Franciscan University (10-4-2) means the Yellow Jackets (9-8-1) move on face the top seed Grove City College (12-2-4) in a rematch of last year's PAC title game. Kickoff in Grove City on Wednesday is set for 5 pm.
The semifinal winners will meet in the PAC Tournament Championship Match, which is slated for Saturday, Nov. 7th at the highest remaining seed.
PAC Quarterfinal 1 - Latrobe, Pa.
No. 3 Saint Vincent 5, No. 6 W&J 0
- The Bearcats scored twice in the opening six minutes to seize control of the match with W&J.
- The initial goal came just 54 seconds into the match from senior Addie Fisher (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley).
- In the sixth minute, senior Emma Koller (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) scored her 18th goal of the season off an assist from senior Emily Ambrose (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) to make it a 2-0 lead.
- Saint Vincent sophomore Riley Kerr (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 19th minute, which was assisted by senior Bella Meder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic).
- Kerr helped the Bearcats clinch the win and spot in the semifinals with goals in the 78th and 90th minutes to also finish off the natural hat trick.
- Koller assisted on the goal in the 78th to give her three points in the match, while freshman Ava Justino (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) assisted on the final score.
- SVC senior keeper Rilyn Warner (Granville, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) turned away four shots in notching her 10th clean sheet of the season.
PAC Quarterfinal 2 - Steubenville, Ohio
No. 5 Waynesburg 1, No. 4 Franciscan 0
- The team combined for 35 shots in the match, with 10 on goal.
- The only goal of the match was scored in the 36th minute when sophomore Bella Norton (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) scored off an assist from senior Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa./Freedom).
- It was Norton's second goal of the season and her first game-winner of the year, while Mohrbacher collected her fourth assist of the year.
- That goal would be all that was needed, largely due to Waynesburg senior goalkeeper Lex Greenlief (Chester, W.Va./Oak Glen). After making three saves in the opening half, she stopped three more in the second to finish with six stops for her sixth shutout of the year.
- The Yellow Jacket defense was strong in the match as well, stepping up with a key clear for a team save on a potential Franciscan score in the 66th minute.
- In net for Franciscan was sophomore Callie Giguere (Piqua, Ohio/Lehman Catholic), who had three saves.
