Grove City to Play Westminster in PAC Baseball Title Game

5/9/2025 11:55:00 PM

WASHINGTON, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - The 2025 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Tournament Championship Game is set for Saturday as Grove City College will take on Westminster College for the title after the two teams emerged from Friday's play.

The Wolverines remained undefeated in the Tournament and will need to lose twice Saturday to the Titans. Game J between the teams will begin at 1 pm and if Westminster wins that, the teams will play again at 4 pm in the If Necessary game.

Grove City improved to 3-0 in Tournament play with a 4-1, 10-inning win over Washington & Jefferson College n Friday's final game. W&J had earned the chance to play Grove City after posting a 14-1 victory over Allegheny College in the day's first game. Westminster reached Saturday's final by hanging on for a 3-2 triumph over Saint Vincent in the middle game of the day.

The conference tournament will be a six-team, double-elimination championship for the second consecutive year. It will be held Wednesday-Saturday, May 7-10 at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pa. The PAC Sports Network (PACSN) will deliver live broadcasts of all of this year's tournament games and to access the broadcasts, just click the link above.

Game G
No. 1 W&J 14, No. 3 Allegheny 1

W&J took the lead with two runs in the first inning and would score in six of the first seven innings, as the Presidents dominated Game G for a 14-1 victory over Allegheny.

The Presidents surged into the lead with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the first, which included an RBI single by Josh Dezenzo and a sacrifice fly by Zac Stern. W&J would add on two more in the second inning and put up a three-spot in the third, highlighted by Dezenzo stealing home to make it a 7-0 lead after three innings.

W&J would increase their lead through the later innings, scoring once in the fourth, four in the sixth and adding single runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Big hits in the four-run seventh were a two-run single by Knox Meier and a two-run double by Luke Alvarez.

As W&J continued to add to their lead, Presidents' starting pitcher Erik Streussnig was masterful on the mound. He went all nine innings for the complete game, limiting the Gators to one unearned run on five hits while striking out four and not walking a batter. It was the first complete game by a W&J pitcher in the Tournament since 2016.

The Presidents' offense delivered 15 hits in support of their freshman pitcher. Meier was one of four players with two hits and he also had four RBIs, while Dezenzo had two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Brian Feldman and Zac Stern scored three times each as well.

For Allegheny, JD Robinson drove in the run with an RBI single in the ninth inning.

Game H
No. 4 Westminster 3, No. 5 Saint Vincent 2

After scoring twice in the first inning to take the lead, Westminster rode outstanding pitching from Jon Albers and Josh Reed to secure a 3-2 victory over Saint Vincent and advance to Saturday's Game J.

Both teams would get runs on the board in the opening inning. A two-out error by the Bearcats in the first inning allowed a pair of runs to score to lift the Titans into a 2-0 lead. Saint Vincent did get one run back in the last of the first, as an RBI single by Derek Hald made it a 2-1 Westminster lead after one inning.

That score would hold for nearly the rest of the game, as both starting pitchers locked down the offenses. Saint Vincent's Tyler Dancu settled in after the first to go into the ninth inning without allowing another run, as he set down the Titans in order four times.

On the other side, Westminster's Jon Albers would work through seven strong innings. The sophomore right-hander would allow just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts with two walks. The Bearcats had a good chance to score in the seventh, getting a runner to third with one out. With the infield playing in, a ball hit back up the middle was back handed by Titan second baseman Logan Murgenovich, who rifled a throw to the plate to cut down the potential tying run and keep the Westminster in front 2-1.

In the ninth, the Titans added an important insurance run when Murgenovich singled with one out, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Chase Tomko's RBI single. That run proved pivotal, as Saint Vincent mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth. The Bearcats loaded the bases with one out and a ground out scored a run to make it a 3-2 game. With the tying run on third and the winning run on second with two outs. Westminster's Reed struck out the final batter to close out the win and earn the save for Albers.

Westminster made the most of their six hits in the game, two of which came off the bat of Quinn Marquis, while Murgenovich scored twice in the win.

Saint Vincent was also limited to six hits in the game, highlighted by Dylan Schmude going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Dancu took the hard-luck loss despite throwing 8.2 quality innings while allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits while five strikeouts.

Game I
No. 2 Grove City 4, No. 1 W&J 1 (10 innings)
After W&J tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the eighth inning, Grove City scored three runs in the 10th inning and starting pitcher Bryce Trischler finished a complete game, as the Wolverines eliminated the five-time defending conference champions to advance to the PAC Championship game Saturday afternoon.

The game was scoreless through the first six innings, although Grove City had chances to take the lead throughout the early stages of the game. The Wolverines had runners on base in each of the first three innings, but managed to put runners on second and third with one out in the fourth. However, W&J shortstop Jacob LaDuca threw out the lead runner on a fielder's choice to help end that threat. Grove City also had a runner reach third with one out in the fifth but a sharp grounder to short didn't bring him home and then a fielder's choice after a hit batter squashed that opportunity.

Grove City finally broke through in the seventh, although that chance nearly fell through as well. After loading the bases with one out, a fly out to shallow right did not bring the run home. But with two outs, Colin Marinpetro hit an RBI single to center for the first run, but the runner trying to go from first to third was thrown out before a second run could cross home and it was a just a 1-0 Wolverine lead.

That looked like it might be enough for Trischler, who was throwing a gem. He blanked W&J through the first seven innings on just three hits and had not allowed a runner to reach third base through that stretch. It looked like he would close out the eighth as well with two quick ground outs, which brought up LaDuca. The two-time PAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, who hit home runs to beat Grove City in the 2023 and 2024 Tournaments, delivered again, belting a solo homer to left to tie the game at 1-1.

Following a scoreless ninth, Grove City immediately went to work in the 10th with a leadoff double by Sam Bevin. The Wolverines would load the bases with one out and Sam Meredith ripped a two-run single for a 3-1 Wolverine lead. Grove City would tack on another on an RBI fielder's choice by Luke Vittone and it was a 4-1 deficit facing W&J. Trischler took the mound for the 10th and didn't let a Presidents' rally start, as he retired the side in order in the 10th. Following the homer in the eighth, Trischler set down the last seven W&J batters to finish the 10-inning complete game, as he allowed just the one run on four hits while striking out three and not issuing a walk.

Grove City posted 11 hits in the victory, with Bevin going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, while Andrew Seest was 3-for-3 and Meredith had a double along with the two-run single. The win also improved the Wolverines to 30-10 this season to tie the program's single-season wins record set in 2023.

Saturday's championship game will mark the first time since 2012 that a program other than W&J or previous PAC member Thomas More has claimed a conference crown. That 2012 PAC champion was Westminster, who also won in 2005 and will be trying to secure their third PAC title in program history. Grove City will be playing for its fourth league championship and first since 2008, as the Wolverines also hoisted the trophy in 2001 and 2002.

In their regular season games this year, the teams split a March 25 doubleheader at Grove City, with Westminster winning game one, 11-9, while Grove City rebounded for a 12-4 win in the nightcap.
