BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (pacathletics.org) – The Geneva College football team is headed to the postseason after receiving a bowl bid from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on Monday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes will travel to SUNY Brockport, near Rochester, New York, to play in the Robert M. "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for noon.
This is Geneva's first postseason appearance since the Golden Tornadoes won the National Christian College Athletic Association Victory Bowl in 2009.
Geneva earned a spot in the postseason after putting together their first winning season since 2009, clinching the chance to compete in a bowl game with a 43-16 victory at Case Western Reserve on Saturday to finish the regular season 6-4 overall, including a 6-2 record in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). That finish tied for third place in the PAC behind W&J and Grove City, who were both selected for the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
Brockport finished with an identical 6-4 record, including a 4-3 performance in the Empire 8 conference. The Golden Eagles boast one of the top running backs in the nation in junior Isaiah Simmons, who is sixth in Division III with 1,338 yards on the ground. He's averaging 6.1 yards per carry and has scored 19 touchdowns. The squad is very balanced offensively, rushing for 2,083 yards while passing for 2,141 yards.
This will be the first matchup between these two teams since Geneva defeated Brockport 45-0 in 1989. Head Coach Geno DeMarco, who will be coaching the last game of his storied 33-year career on Saturday, was an assistant coach for the Golden Tornadoes that season and was on the sidelines for that matchup in Rochester.
This is the first ECAC appearance for a PAC program since 2023. That year, Washington & Jefferson posted a 46-21 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the 2023 ECAC James Lynah Bowl, while Carnegie Mellon defeated Brockport 37-7 in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl.
The PAC has performed well in recent postseason bowl opportunities. Counting ECAC bowls and the Opendorse Bowl Series that began last year, PAC teams have a 10-4 record in those postseason games since the 2018 season.
