WASHINGTON, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Washington & Jefferson College won its 28th Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) football championship Saturday afternoon with a 67-0 victory over visiting Thiel College at W&J's Cameron Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents, who earned a share of the title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs with a 49-7 victory at Geneva College last week, earned sole possession of this year's conference crown with Saturday's victory. It also completed an undefeated run through the PAC this season, as W&J went 8-0 in the league and improved to 8-2 overall.
It's the second consecutive season W&J has won at least a share of the PAC title, as the Presidents were tri-champions with Grove City College and Carnegie Mellon University in 2024. W&J's 28 championships are also the most in PAC history, with Carnegie Mellon ranking a distant second with 10. This is the 10th PAC title for W&J under long-time head coach Mike Sirianni, who became the sixth active NCAA football head coach to reach 200 career wins and 94th all-time in NCAA history when the Presidents defeated Case Western Reserve University 28-17 on Nov. 1st.
The Presidents went right to work in Saturday's win, opening the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore Andrew Sharp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) just 2:49 into the first quarter. By the end of the first period, Sharp had added a second TD run, senior quarterback Kellan Stahl (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) had thrown for a pair of touchdowns and the W&J defense chipped in with an interception return for a score by sophomore Dante DeRubbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and a safety to stake the Presidents to a 36-0 lead.
The lead grew to 53-0 by halftime and the Presidents added two more touchdowns in the second half for the final points. Earlier this season, Stahl set a new NCAA Division III record for completion percentage when he was 27-of-28 (96.4 percent) in a win over Waynesburg Oct. 25. W&J quarterbacks nearly matched that effort Saturday, as Stahl, junior Colin Payne (Reading, Pa./Exeter) and senior Trey Holsman (Yardley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) combined to go 24-for-25 (96 percent) for 375 yards and six TDs in the victory.
The W&J defense also had a near flawless performance, limiting Thiel (1-9) to one first down, -29 yards rushing and four total yards of offense.
W&J now awaits the selections for the NCAA Playoffs, which be be announced Sunday evening at 5 pm. It's the second consecutive season the Presidents will play in the national playoffs and 28th time overall in program history.
