Westminster Defeats Marietta in Extra Points Bowl Bowl was part of inaugural Opendorse Bowl Series in Canton, Ohio 11/24/2024 12:55:00 AM CANTON, Ohio (pacathletics.org) - Off the strenghth of a blocked punt for a touchdown and an interception return for a TD, Westminster College defeated Marietta College 27-13 in the Extra Points Bowl, which was part of the inagural Opendorse Bowl in Canton, Ohio Saturday night. The Titans (8-3) grabbed the lead just 1:35 into the game when a blocked punt was returned 14 yards for a touchdown by junior Gavin Greaves (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) for a lead Westminster could not relinquish. Following a Marietta (8-3) field goal, graduate student running back Ryan Gomes (Tampa, Fla./Walter L. Sickles) ran for a seven-yard TD run later in the first quarter for a 13-3 Titan advantage after the extra point was blocked. A pair of field goals by freshman Andrew Caranna (Copley, Ohio/Revere) from 33 and 30 yards helped counter 10 Pioneer points and Westminster held a 19-13 lead late in the fourth quarter. Marietta had the ball with a chance to drive for the potential winning score but an interception by Titan senior defensive lineman Jean Garry Joseph (Morth Miami, Fla./Ebenezer Christian) was returned 11 yards for a touchdown with 2:32. Following a two-point conversion pass from senior QB Billy Levak to wide receiver Taite Beachy (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) the Titans had their final margin of victory at 27-13. In his final game for the Titans, Gomes rushed for 55 yards and a score, while senior wide receiver Jalen Washington (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) caught five passes for a team-high 58 yards. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Dylan Sleva (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) had a massive game, totaling 16 tackles, including two for loss and a sack, as well as a fumble recovery and two pass break-ups.
