TOWSON, Md. (pacathletic.org) - The Allegheny College men's tennis team saw its outstanding 2022-23 season come to an end on Friday morning, as the Gators dropped their opening-round matchup against Christopher Newport University in the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Captains (11-8), ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), took the first-ever meeting with the Gators (17-5) by a 5-1 final score at Goucher College's Schroedl Tennis Center.

The only point Allegheny earned came from the No. 1 doubles duo of sophomore Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and freshman Ethan Carr (King of Prussia, Pa./Harriton). They took down Nesh Kumaresan and Alec Strause, the sixth-ranked tandem in the Atlantic South, in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3). It's only the fifth loss Kumaresan and Strause have suffered in 19 doubles matches this year, while Hedlund and Carr improved to 13-2.

Leading 2-1 after doubles, CNU clinched the match with singles victories at No. 2. No. 4, and No. 5.

Although they didn't factor into the final decision, Hedlund and junior Julien Voisey (Tokyo, Japan/ES International School) each won their opening set.

The Gators finished the regular a season with a perfect 8-0 record against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition and won the PAC Tournament Championship with a 5-1 victory over Grove City College April 29. Although individuals from Allegheny have played in the NCAA Championships in the past, the 2022-23 academic year marks the first time in school history that the Gators have qualified as a team.
