Geneva wins PAC title

GREENVILLE, Pa. (pacathletics.org)--Top-seeded Geneva College claimed its second Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Championship Tournament title Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 victory over No. 3 Bethany College. 

Geneva (36-5) hosted the double-elimination tournament Friday and Saturday, May 7-8 at the Bill and Rita Conrady Softball Field in Beaver Falls.

Geneva won its first PAC title in 2012.

With Saturday's championship tournament title, Geneva secured the league's automatic qualifying bid (Pool A) to the NCAA Division III Championship, with regional play scheduled for Thursday-Sunday, May 20-23. Team and regional sites selected for the Division III Softball Championship will be announced at 1 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, May 17.

Junior Nicole West (Glenwood, Md. | McDonogh) closed out Geneva's run to the PAC title with a terrific five-hit, complete-game shutout Saturday afternoon... West improved to 16-2 this spring with the victory... Senior Marina Manuppelli (Mars, Pa. | Mars) delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning to give Geneva a 3-1 lead... Sophomore Peri Ceasri (El Dorado Hills, Calif. | Vista Del Lago) had a two-out, RBI single in the fifth to extend Geneva's lead to 4-2... Bethany junior Jen Oberthur (Indianapolis, Ind. | Park Tudor) went 2-for-4 with a double... Oberthur hit .600 in Bethany's four games during the tournament... She had five doubles and scored three times... Senior Gabby Capaldi (Steubenville, Ohio | Catholic Central) went 2-for-3... Junior Paige Allen (Avella, Pa. | Avella) went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI... Freshman Josie Wise (Canton, Ohio | Perry) allowed four runs (3 earned) on six hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

Grove City senior Ashley Cornelius (Youngstown, Ohio | Boardman) allowed five runs (4 earned) on 13 hits in the complete game win... It was her 11th victory of the spring... She struck out seven... Cornelius also went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs... Freshman Lauren McNeil (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio | Cuyahoga Valley Christian) went 2-for4 with two runs scored and an RBI...
