Saint Vincent, W&J to meet in title game Saturday

GREENVILLE, Pa. (pacathletics.org)--Top-seeded Saint Vincent College and No. 2 Washington & Jefferson College claimed convincing Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament semifinal victories Wednesday night to secure spots in Saturday's title game.  

Saint Vincent (9-0) pulled away from No. 4 Westminster College (6-5) in the second half to score a 72-55 win at the Robert S. Carey Student Center while W&J (8-0) earned a 62-40 victory over No. 3 Grove City College (8-2), the defending PAC champion, at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.


Saturday's title game between No. 1 Saint Vincent and No. 2 W&J will get underway at  6 p.m. at the Robert S. Carey Student Center. It will be just the second all-time meeting between Saint Vincent and W&J in the title game. 

Monday, March 15 (Semifinal 1)

Saint Vincent will move on to the title game for the sixth time in program history. The Bearcats won their first and only PAC title in 2018-19 with a 70-48 win over W&J at the Carey Center. After trailing by as many as five in the third, top-seeded Saint Vincent strung together 13-straight points to grab a 53-41 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter. Sophomore Madison Weber (Grampian, Pa. | Curwensville) had six points during the spurt. Senior Ashley Russell (Belle Vernon, Pa. | Belle Vernon) hit a three-pointer with under eight minutes remaining in regulation to cut Westminster's deficit to five, 57-52. The Bearcats finished the game on a 15-3 run to lock up the 17-point victory. Saint Vincent senior Jenna Lafko (Gibsonia, Pa. | Hampton) finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and six steals while freshman Emily Cavacini (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Shaler) added 12 bench points. The Bearcats shot 47.5 percent from the floor. Russell led four Westminster players in double figures, finished with 17 points. Junior Magen Polczynski (Irwin, Pa. | Norwin) chipped in with 14 while sophomore Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Brentwood) and junior Megan Meyer (New Galilee, Pa. | Mohawk) added 11 points and five rebounds apiece.

Saturday will be W&J's fourth-straight appearance in the title game. The Presidents own five PAC titles, with its most recent coming in 2006. An 11-0 second quarter W&J run Wednesday helped the Presidents forge a 31-25 halftime lead. W&J finished the half with a 25-14 advantage on the glass. Grove City freshman Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Avonworth) hit a pair of free throws to cut Saint Vincent's lead to three, 33-30, with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Leading by 10 (46-36) going into the fourth, W&J outscored Grove City 12-0 over the final four minutes to pick up the 22-point win. Senior Alie Seto (Allison, Pa. | Brownsville) led the Presidents with 19 points, eight rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocks. Senior Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Baldwin) finished with 17 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals while senior Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa. | Central) posted a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double. Goetz led all Grove City scorers with 14 points and 10 rebounds. It was her fifth double-double of the season. W&J finished the game with a 54-30 rebounding edge and limited Grove City to just 25.4 percent shooting from the floor. The Wolverines made just 1-of-14 of their three-point attempts. 

Monday, March 15 (Quarterfinal 1)
No. 8 Waynesburg at No. 1 Saint Vincent

After visiting Waynesburg jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 1:14 into the first quarter, top-seeded Saint Vincent outscored the Yellow Jackets 25-11 to take a 25-18 lead heading into the second quarter. Sophomore Ella Marconi (Kane, Pa. | Kane) scored with 4:45 remaining the second quarter to push the Bearcats' lead to 12, 37-25, before carrying a 42-35 lead into the break. A 13-0 third quarter Saint Vincent run, capped by senior Jenna Lafko's (Gibsonia, Pa. | Gibsonia) three-pointer, pushed their lead to 17, 63-46. The Bearcats outscored the Yellow Jackets 24-11 in the fourth to secure its trip to the semifinals. Marconi paced Saint Vincent with a 20-point, 15-rebound double-double. Senior Carlee Kilgus (Bridgeville, Pa. | South Fayette) added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Senior Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. | West Shamokin) led four Waynesburg players in double figures, finishing with 18 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. It was her league-leading seventh double-double of the season.

Freshmen Makenzee Mason (Lithopolis, Ohio | Bloom-Carroll) and Nikki Bradbury (Carroll, Ohio | Bloom-Carroll) combined to score 14 of Bethany's 16 fourth quarter points, but it wasn't enough to knock off No. 2 W&J. After the visiting Bison forged a 15-15 tie after the first period, W&J finished the second with a 22-18 advantage to take a 37-33 lead into the break. Up just one, 38-37 with 8:42 to go in the third, W&J put together an 8-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws from senior Alie Seto (Allison, Pa. | Brownsville), to go up nine, 46-37, with just under four minutes in the period. Bradbury scored six of Bethany's final nine points of the quarter to cut the Presidents' lead to three, 49-46, heading into the fourth. Mason's jumper with eight seconds left in regulation pulled the Bison to within three, 65-62, but senior Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Baldwin) split a pair of free throws with six seconds left to give W&J the four-point victory. Seto led W&J with 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Senior Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Plum) finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. W&J outrebounded Bethany by a 48-32 margin. Mason totaled 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists to pace Bethany. Bradbury added 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, going 5-for-10 from three-point range. Both benches scored 14 points apiece. 

Monday, March 15 (Quarterfinal 3)

Grove City finished with four players in double figures in Monday's win. Senior Jess Bowen (Pittsburgh, Pa. | North Hills) fired in a game-high 26 points while freshman Kat Goetz (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Avonworth) posted 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Sophomore guard Emma Vezzosi (St. Mary's County, Md. | Leonardtown) tossed in 11 points and junior Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa. | Hempfield) added 10 points. Geneva assumed an 18-15 lead with 2:15 to go in the first quarter on a bucket from senior Lauren Tipton (Glenside, Pa. | Phil-Mont Christian Academy). Grove City closed the period on an 11-3 run to lead 26-21 going into the second. Grove City opened the second quarter with a 12-4 outburst. Bowen scored seven of the 12 points while senior Jordan McConnell (Smithville, Ohio | Smithville) scored on a driving layup with seven minutes left, giving Grove City a 40-25 lead. The Wolverines led 51-35 at the half before outscoring Geneva 34-17 in the third quarter. Senior Emily Melnek (Poland, Ohio | Poland) led Geneva with 16 points. Sophomore Isabella Roth (Ellwood City, Pa. | Ellwood City) added 15 and Tipton posted a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double.

Monday, March 15 (Quarterfinal 4)
No. 5 Chatham at No. 4 Westminster

Chatham junior Kaitlyn Fertig (Bethel Park, Pa. | Bethel Park) drilled a three-pointer to cut Westminster's lead to just one, 66-65, with seven seconds to play in regulation, but junior Magen Polczynski (Irwin, Pa. | Irwin) split two free throws before sophomore Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Brentwood) knocked down a pair from the line to preserve the Titans' four-point win. Murrio led all scorers in Monday's quarterfinal with 22 points. She added five rebounds, four blocks and a pair of steals. Sophomore Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio | Ursuline) chipped in with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double while Polczynski finished with 11 points and four assists. Graduate student Maddy Grennes (Westfield, Ind. | Westfield) paced the Cougars with a career-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds and three steals. Fertig finished with 16 points.

Saturday, March 13 (First Round 1)

The Bison had three players finish in double figures, led by freshman Nikki Bradbury’s (Carroll, Ohio | Bloom-Carroll) game-high 18 points. Twelve of Bradbury’s 18 came in the first half. Junior Kelsie Meintel (Moundsville, W.Va. | Cameron) finished with 14 first half points on 5-of-7 shooting while freshman Makenzee Mason (Lithopolis, Ohio | Bloom-Carroll) chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists. Bethany finished with a 30-19 rebounding edge, shot 46.3 percent (25-54) from the floor and made 14-of-32 (43.8%) of its three-point attempts. Bethany’s 14 made three-pointers on Saturday are the second-most by a PAC squad (Geneva, 21 vs. Thiel on Feb. 27) this season. Franciscan freshman Ashley Benson (Arlington, Texas | Nolan Catholic) posted a career-high 11 points in the loss, going 4-for-7 from the field. Sophomore Clare McGahan (Reedley, Calif. | Reedley) and freshman Natalie Conner (Liberty Township, Ohio | Bishop Fenwick) each finished with nine points and four rebounds.  
Saturday, March 13 (First Round 2)

Trailing 63-60, Thiel junior Rachel Breckenridge (Burton, Ohio | Berkshire) drained three-straight free throws after drawing a foul with one second remaining in regulation to force overtime. Waynesburg freshman Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. | Riverside) scored six overtime points to help the Yellow Jackets advance to the quarterfinals for the second-straight year. Senior Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. | West Shamokin) paced Waynesburg with 18 points and seven rebounds. Wolf finished with 18 points and seven rebounds while junior Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. | Hampton) posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. It was her fourth of the season. Breckenridge led a pair of Thiel scorers in double figures, finishing with a game-high 21 points. It was Breckenridge’s first 20-point effort this season. Sophomore Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md. | Western) totaled 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the loss.
