The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) is thrilled to participate in the third annual Division III Week – a celebration of the division’s unique philosophy that equally values academics, athletics and student-athletes’ involvement in a full and rich campus life. Division III Week provides an opportunity for all individuals associated with a Division III institution or conference to recognize the powerful impact of athletics and student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community.

Why Division III?
Rosanne Scott
Westminster College
A 2000 Bethany graduate, Rose was twice named the league’s Player of the Year and helped lead the Bison to three PAC titles and two trips to the Division III Championship Tournament. She was inducted into the Bethany Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 and ranks third on Bethany’s all-time scoring list with 1,636 points.
I have been at the Division III level as a student-athlete and coach for 18 years. When my parents dropped me off at Bethany as a freshman and picked me up four years later, I was a totally different person. Instead of the shy, uncertain, quiet girl I was when I arrived, I was a confident, well-rounded woman who believed she could accomplish anything she put her mind to.
I realized there is only one way to reach your goals and that is with hard work. I value the meaning of teamwork. I know you may not always accomplish your goals, but knowing you did your best is what makes your family proud! How did I get that way? By my experiences as a DIII student-athlete.
Now, with the roles reversed, I am mentoring 18-to-22 year olds and trying to instill those same qualities. As every season begins, challenges are accepted and the journey my players take will teach them lessons a classroom can't. Life is not always fair. Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn. Everyone’s experience is different, but with life, what you put into your journey is what you get out of it.
Why Division III?
Family
-Writing an injured teammate’s number on your shoes
-Staying after practice and helping a freshman who is behind
Sportsmanship
-A rival school letting an injured senior come into her senior game unguarded to score her last points ever
Commitment
-Getting home late from a game knowing you have to get up and take a test the next morning
Self-Discipline
-Making the time when there is none
-Knowing no one is watching you and you still don’t cut corners
One day you’ll wake up and you won’t remember the scores or the win-loss records, but you will remember the love for your team. How you could barely fall asleep the night before the game, the feeling you had in your stomach during warm-ups, and how it was comforting knowing your teammates were right there with you. Your teammates become your best friends, your family, and your motivators and will continue to be long after you take your uniform off for the last time.
What did Division III basketball teach me? It taught me about the game of life.
