Visiting Athletic Injury Assessment Report

Section I: Athletic Trainers' Committee

Section II: Professional Courtesy (Host Athletic Trainer)

A. Pre-Event: The host athletic trainer will extend the following professional courtesies to the visiting athletic trainer and his/her team:

1. In person greeting, and check on any travel related problems or special requests.

2. Provide adequate space and tables for taping. A minimum of 1-2 tables should be available for all visiting team use, for all sports. Also, it is highly recommended that visitors are provided two sideline tables for football.

3. Supply ice and water source for visiting teams. Provision of containers is subject to availability.

4. If treatments are required, and a certified athletic trainer does not accompany the team, a Treatment Release Form must be completed and signed by the visiting teams' certified athletic trainer and submitted to the host certified athletic trainer prior to treatment.

B. During the Event: The host athletic trainer will extend the following professional courtesies to the visiting athletic trainer and his/her team:

1. Recommend providing a certified athletic trainer, and/or first aid, CPR and AED trained personnel at all conference athletic events.

2. Provide and ambulance, and/or means by which to call an ambulance for conference athletic events.

3. It is recommended that each host institution have available as needed: splints, crutches, cervical collar, knee immobilizer, blanket, and scoop or spine board stretcher.

4. Recommend an ambulance should be present at the field for all varsity football games and junior varsity football games.

5. In the event of a serious injury, the host athletic trainer will coordinate any further emergency care.

6. A biohazard waste bag or container on the bench/sideline.

C. Post-Event

1. If an event physician is present, the host athletic trainer will arrange for the physician to remain in the athletic training room for a brief period after the even tot evaluate all injuries sustained during the event by both teams. The host athletic trainer will then personally check with the visiting team athletic trainer for any injuries or problems.

2. If an athlete is injured and the host athletic trainer tends to the injury, the host athletic trainer will be required to complete a Visiting Athlete Injury Assessment Report. The host athletic trainer will retain the original and the copy shall be given to the visiting team coach.

3. The host athletic trainer should contact the athletic trainer of the injured athlete regarding the evaluation.

Section III: Professional Courtesy (Visiting Athletic Trainer)

A. Pre-Event

1. Teams requiring the assistance of the home athletic trainer should notify that institution athletic trainer at least 24 hours in advance of the contest.

2. If for some reason special medical care or equipment is required for an athlete, the visiting athletic trainer will contract the host athletic trainer at least 24 hour sin advance and inform him or her of the special needs.

3. Visiting teams are expected to supply their own taping supplies and medical kits.

B. During the Event

1. The visiting athletic trainer and/or coach will be responsible for requesting medical assistance from the host athletic trainer in case of serious injury to any athletes. The visiting athletic trainer and/or coach is to remain with the injured athlete while the host athletic trainer is attending to the injured athlete.

C. Post-Event

1. The visiting athletic trainer will keep all injured athletes whom he or she believe should be examined by the event physician together after the event so that the medical evaluations can be made promptly and efficiently after the event.

Section IV: Physicians

A. The host institution will provide for an attending physician at all varsity football games. It is recommended that a physician be present at all junior varsity football games.

B. An attending physician's decision concerning an athlete's ability to participate can not be overruled by and athletic trainer, coach, athlete or parent.

Section V: Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Event

A. When the event is hosted by an institution, that institution's athletic trainer is responsible for coordinating all athletic training and emergency services. The athletic trainer may personally cover the event, arrange for one of his/her staff members to cover the event, or arrange for coverage by the participating institutions.

B. Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Minimum Coverage

1. Baseball/Softball

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call.

2. Cross Country

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call.

c. Recommend radio communications on course.

3. Golf

a. No special coverage.

b. Emergency squad on call.

4. Soccer

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call.

5. Swimming and Diving

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call.

6. Tennis

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call.

7. Track & Field

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call.

8. Volleyball

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call.

9. Wrestling

a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

b. Emergency squad on call              

          10. Basketball

          a. Certified Athletic Trainer on site.

          b. Emergency squad on call.

Note: "On Site" is defined as being physically present at the event.  "On Call" is defined as being available to be present within a reasonable period of time (5 minutes).

        C.    Since tennis is held offsite in Erie, the PAC executive director will secure athletic training coverage for the fall and spring event. The conference will compensate the Certified Athletic Trainer.
