TRAFFORD, Pa. (pacathletics.org) - Top-seeded South Division champion Saint Vincent College and second-seeded Washington & Jefferson College both advanced with semifinal wins Thursday night, setting up a South Division showdown in the PAC Women's Basketball Tournament Championship Game.
Saint Vincent (21-6) punched its ticket to the title game for the eighth time with a 78-60 win over Bethany in Latrobe. The Bearcats set the tone early with a 24-11 first-quarter lead and never looked back, shooting 49 percent from the field while forcing 15 turnovers, which led to a 22-7 advantage in points off turnovers. Saint Vincent controlled the paint by a 40-24 margin and got a 20-4 scoring edge from the bench. Senior forward Camdon Bashor led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds, junior guard Olivia Yancy added 13 with three triples, and senior forward Makenna Maier scored 12. Sophomore guard Brooke Evans chipped in 10 as Saint Vincent’s depth helped maintain control throughout.
For Bethany, who finishes with a 17-10 record, sophomore guard Ella Simpson scored a game-high 24 points and graduate student guard Lindsey Garrison dropped in 19 points.
Defending champion Washington & Jefferson (21-6) earned its return trip to the championship with a 58-42 win over Chatham at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. The Presidents pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Cougars by 14 over the final 20 minutes while shooting 45 percent after halftime. Junior forward Katie Kovalchick (15 points, 10 rebounds) and senior guard Stellanie Loutsion (12 points, 12 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles, while graduate student guard Riley DeRubbo scored 14 and junior guard Marina Grado added 13. W&J shot 83 percent from the free-throw line and controlled the boards 46-32 to secure the victory.
Leading Chatham (18-9) in the semifinal was senior forward Madison Nereu with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while senior forward Alyssa Laukus nearly had a double-double with 10 points and eight boards.
Saint Vincent will host the Presidents for the third match-up between the teams this season in the PAC Championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center. The PAC Sports Network will provide live free-to-view coverage of Saturday's PAC title game.
The last time the two met, Saint Vincent won a back-and-forth battle, edging W&J 77-74 in overtime at home. The Bearcats defeated the Presidents in both regular-season match-ups, having also won by a 72-59 margin in Washington on Jan. 21st. Saint Vincent will look to capture its fourth league title in eight years, while W&J will seek to defend its conference crown and win the PAC for the eighth time in program history.
