MEADVILLE, Pa. (pacathletics.org) – The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team (6-4-2, 2-2-1) picked up a memorable 1-0 victory over the Allegheny Gators (4-6-4, 2-2-1) Wednesday, as it marked the 300th win for W&J Head Men's Soccer Coach Ian McDonald.
McDonald is one of 15 active NCAA Division III coaches to reach 300 career victories and his career record stands at 300-270-54.
In his 35th season, the veteran coach is tied for the sixth-longest tenured active head coach in NCAA Division III Men's Soccer. McDonald has helped W&J claim five Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships (2003, 2004, 2007, 2019, 2020-21) and been named PAC Coach of the Year six times in his career.
Both sides opened the first half of soccer with a scoreless draw after the first 45 minutes. W&J held an 11-8 edge in shots with a draw in corners 3-3 in the opening half.
In the 80th minute of the second half, freshman Jacek Piekut (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) found junior Jimmy Gogol (Westminster, Md./Westminster) for a contested shot on goal to put the Presidents up 1-0 with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. Fending off shots and corners in the closing plays, W&J held on for the one goal victory over the Gators.
Gogol led the team in shots with eight total, six being on target. Four of the five goals Gogol has scored this season have been game winners for the Presidents. Junior Tavan Schoenberger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) launched four shots on the evening with one landing on target.
Junior Graeme Ewart (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) picked up his third victory of the season with seven saves in net.
