PAC Wrestling Championships slated for Saturday

2/10/2022 12:15:00 PM

GREENVILLE, Pa. (pacathletics.org)--Waynesburg University is set to host the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Wrestling Championships Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The PAC did not hold its wrestling championships in 2020-21 due to the disruptions caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

First-round matches will begin at 10 a.m. The awards presentation will take place after the conclusion of all championship bouts.

Schools participating in this year’s championships are Thiel College, Washington & Jefferson College and host Waynesburg.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students. PAC and institutional passes are not accepted at PAC Championship events. Students from PAC institutions will be admitted for free with a valid college ID.

Thiel owns 22 PAC titles, trailing past league member John Carroll University (23 straight from 1966-67 to 1988-89) by one for the most in conference history. Thiel won its last PAC title in 2015-16. Waynesburg has won seven PAC titles, claiming three-straight from 2016-17 to 2018-19, while W&J has won six PAC titles, with its most recent coming in 2019-20. It was W&J's first conference championship since 1988-99.

The PAC Championships feature double-elimination brackets, with each school having the opportunity to enter up to two student-athletes in each of the 10 weight classes. The seeding of each program’s top wrestler in the 10 weight classes was determined by a vote of the league’s coaches, and wrestlers from the same team competing in each class will be placed on opposite sides of the bracket. First-round byes will be placed randomly throughout the brackets, as necessary.

There are four returning conference champions scheduled to be in action Saturday. The group is headlined by Waynesburg junior Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. | West Allegheny), who was voted both the PAC Newcomer of the Year and the PAC Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the heavyweight title at the 2019-20 PAC Championships.

Other returning PAC champions include:
*W&J senior Manny Dovshek (Scenery Hill, Pa. | Bentworth) won the 125-pound title in 2020.

*Thiel junior Jake Alberts (Ellwood City, Pa. | Lincoln) won the 133-pound title in 2020.
*W&J senior Alex Donahue (Indiana, Pa. | Indiana) won the 197-pound title in 2020.

All three programs will represent the PAC at this year’s NCAA Division III Southeast Regional Championships from Friday-Saturday, Feb. 25-26 at Lycoming College. The Division III Championships, scheduled for Friday-Saturday, March 11-12, will be held in the U.S. Cellular Center in Grand Rapids, Iowa.
