Chatham claims first-ever PAC women's soccer title

GREENVILLE, Pa. (pacathletics.org)--Second-seeded Chatham University scored its first-ever Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) women's soccer championship Saturday evening with a 3-1 victory over top-seeded Grove City College in the PAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament title match at Don Lyle Field in Grove City. 

It was the second-straight season Chatham (8-1-2) and Grove City (10-1-1) met for the league title. Grove City defeated Chatham 4-1 in last year's championship match.

Chatham opened the scoring in the 18th minute when graduate student Kyla Kelley (Tarentum, Pa. | Highlands) scored off of an assist from sophomore Olivia Wood (Monroeville, Pa. | Gateway)... Junior Paxton Steffy (Stevens, Pa. | Cocalico) pushed Chatham's lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 31st minute... The goals by Kelley and Steffy were their third scores of the season... Grove City freshman Gianna D'Amato (Maywood, N.J. | Hawthorne Christian) cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal 24 seconds after Steffy's score... D'Amato's goal, her seventh of the spring, came off of an assist from sophomore Hailey Weinert (Landenberg, Pa. | Kennett)... Chatham sophomore Maggie Toomey (Bethel Park, Pa. | Bethel Park) extended the Cougars' lead to 3-1 with a goal in the 77th minute... Chatham sophomore Tyler Colburn (Marriottsville, Md. | Marriotts Ridge) made fives saves in Saturday's victory... Grove City had a 12-11 advantage in shots, while Chatham claimed a 8-6 edge in shots on goal... Grove City senior Columbia Harkrader (Mineral, Va. | Louisa County) had five saves... Chatham finished the match with a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks... All eight corner kicks came in the second half.

Grove City will be playing for its third-straight conference title after securing the semifinal win... The Wolverines scored their three goals in a 14-minute span of the first half Wednesday night... Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when sophomore Hailey Weinert (Landenberg, Pa. | Kennett) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season... The goal came after Weinert collected a cross from junior Maggie Williams (Mars, Pa. | Mars) in front of the goal area... Nine minutes later, freshman Megan Mathes (Charlottesville, Va. | Albemarle) pushed the lead to 2-0 with her third goal of the spring... Freshman Giana D'Amato (Maywood, N.J. | Hawthorne Christian) assisted the Mathes goal, which came in the 30th minute... D'Amato then recorded her second assist of the match in the 34th minute when she set up a goal by junior Tirzah Lloyd (Durham, N.C. | Homeschooled)... Lloyd collected the ball in front of the goal and booted it into the net for her sixth goal of the season... Grove city senior Columbia Harkrader (Mineral, Va. | Louisa County) stopped four shots to earn the shutout victory... It is Grove City's ninth shutout this year and the 21st of Harkrader's career... That extends her own school record... Franciscan senior Marita Ostrich (Manassas, Va. | Seton) made four saves in the loss... Grove City owned an 18-6 edge in total shots... The Wolverines had eight shots on goal while Franciscan had four shots on goal... Each team had four corner kicks.

Chatham, making its fifth-straight championship tournament appearance, earned its second-straight trip to the championship tournament's title match with Wednesday's semifinal win...
