Westminster secures PAC men's golf title 4/24/2021 8:40:07 PM WHEELING, W.Va. (pacathletics.org)--Westminster College claimed the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Men’s Golf Championship team title Saturday afternoon. Westminster finished with a team score of 306 in Saturday's second and final round. The Titans finished the two championship rounds with a team score of 599 (293-306). Westminster carried a nine-stroke lead into the second round. The team title was Westminster's fourth. The Titans won three-straight from 2003-05. The men played their final 18 holes Saturday at Oglebay Resort’s Speidel Golf Club with a round on the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course. Monday's opening round was played at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio. Washington & Jefferson College finished as the runner-up (621, 302-319). Grove City College was third (634, 308-326), Thiel College was fourth (663, 330-333), Saint Vincent College was fifth (686 (343-343) and Waynesburg University was sixth (709, 350-359). W&J senior Garrett Barilar (Bloomsburg, Pa. | Central Cambria) earned PAC Player of the Year honors with a two-round total of 147 (72-75). He entered the day tied for third and was three shots back of the leader after 18 holes and finished one stroke ahead of the runner-up, Westminster junior Michael Bell (Canonsburg, Pa. | Peters Township), who posted a two-round total of 148 (69-79). Thiel freshman Tyler Zere (Ronkonkoma, N.Y. | Connetquot) was named the PAC Newcomer of the Year. He finished ninth in the 30-man field with a two-round total of 156 (79-77). Westminster head coach Matt Torrence was voted the PAC Coach of the Year. This year's PAC Championships featured a 36-hole stroke play event. The combined 36-hole team totals determined PAC team champions and winners of the league's automatic qualifying bids to the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships. The All-PAC teams, as well as the PAC Players of the Year and PAC Newcomers of the Year, were determined by the combined 36-hole scores from the championships. The top five individual finishers were named All-PAC First Team. The players finishing sixth through 10th were named All-PAC Second Team. The players finishing 11th through 15th were named All-PAC Honorable Mention. As the winner of this year's PAC title Westminster earned the conference's automatic-qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. The field for this year’s Division III Men's Golf Championships is scheduled to be announced Wednesday, May 5. The Division III Championships are scheduled for Tuesday-Friday, May 11-14 and will be contested at the Oglebay Golf Course in Wheeling, W.Va. Championship rounds will be played at the Speidel Golf Club on the Arnold Palmer Course and the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Course.
