PAC hosts Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet/60th Anniversary Celebration

PITTSBURGH (pacathletics.org) – The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) held its Second Annual PAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Banquet on Tuesday, May 19. The invitation-only event also served as the concluding affair of the PAC's year-long 60th anniversary celebration. Both past and present PAC members were in attendance to commend the conference's 60 years.

The evening of celebration was held at LeMont Restaurant, situated in Pittsburgh's historic Mount Washington neighborhood. The event started with a reception for all attendees at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the introduction of the honorees.

With overwhelming support from conference presidents and athletic administrators, the PAC launched its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Banquet in 2014 as another way to recognize the league's best and brightest student-athletes for their athletic achievements, excellence in the classroom and outstanding community service efforts.

Over 120 were on hand to join in the celebration of the 22 recognized scholar-athletes. 

Each of the PAC's 10 full-time member institutions (Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College), along with football affiliates Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University, were represented by some of their most distinguished student-athletes at the event.

Bethany College
Jessica Kusnierz
New Castle, Pennsylvania
Shenango High School
Major: Sports Management
Sport: Softball

One of the top students representing Bethany’s Physical Education department, Jessica was named to the Dean’s List five times and earned Presidents’ List honors twice. She was also named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll after each of her four seasons with the Bison softball program. A Kalon Scholar, she recently received the S. Elizabeth Reed Award, presented to the senior female Physical Education major displaying outstanding scholarship and athletic participation during her four years at the College. Jessica is also a member of the Gamma Sigma Kappa, Phi Delta Psi and Pi Gamma Mu honorary fraternities. Following the 2015 season she was named a recipient of the Derek Hoffman Memorial Award, which is presented annually to the female student-athlete who embodies the spirit and character of Bethany athletics. She was a three-time All-PAC selection, earning an Honorable Mention selection in 2013 before claiming back-to-back Second Team honors in 2014 and 2015. A four-year starter, she finished her career with a .302 batting average and ranks fourth and sixth, respectively, on Bethany’s all-time runs scored (115) and doubles (34) lists. Jessica also set the school’s single-season runs scored record, crossing the plate 45 times during the 2015 season.
Brooks Kursey
Martinsburg, West Virginia
Hedgesville High School
Major: History/Secondary Education
Sport: Football

Brooks was named to Bethany’s Presidents’ List after each of his eight semesters and earned PAC Academic Honor Roll distinction on four occasions. Following his senior year, he was honored with the Frank Alfred Chapman Memorial Award, presented to the College’s outstanding History student. He was also honored with the Exceptional Secondary Education Award as well as being named a Bethany Football Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Brooks is a member of the Phi Alpha Theta, Pi Gamma Mu and Kappa Delta Pi honoraries. As a member of the Bison football program, he appeared in 29 games during his four-year career, finishing with 45.5 tackles. A special teams starter, he appeared in all 11 games as a senior, tallying a career-high 24 tackles and one fumble recovery. Working with the College’s Education department, Brooks participated in three College-hosted “Fun Days” for local middle schoolers and assisted with the science fair at Woodsdale Elementary School this spring.

Sport: Football

Thomas, a graduate student studying mechanical engineering, served as a University Disciplinary Board member, Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT) Senator, Resident Assistant and CIT Virtual Peer Advisor while also working as a member of the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy Student Advisory Councils during his time as an undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon. A four-year member of the Carnegie Mellon football program, he was recognized as a member of the Fall 2014 PAC Academic Honor Roll and was named to the University Athletic Association’s (UAA) All-Academic Recognition list following the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Thomas, the CEO of HeadSmart Labs, started the company with researchers from Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh to develop new testing methods and safety devices for athletes to help prevent head and neck injuries. He also founded and later assumed CEO responsibilities for Promos on Campus, a source for college and university promotional products, in his dorm room during the 2012 Fall semester.

Sean was a Fall 2014 PAC Academic Honor Roll designee and also qualified for the Sixth Annual University Athletic Association (UAA) Presidents’ Council Scholar-Athlete Team. Earning UAA Fall All-Academic Team honors for the third-straight season in 2014, he also claimed UAA Special Teams Co-Player of the Year honors following his junior campaign after setting the University’s single-season record in kickoff return yards. Selected as a semifinalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, which annually recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation, Sean served as an executive officer for Case Western Reserve’s Beta Alpha Psi professional accounting fraternity and was a recipient of the University’s Accounting Award.

Kianna completed internships with AT&T in Atlanta during the summer of 2014 and with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the fall semester of 2014. A NCAA Division III Regional Championships qualifier in 2014 and 2015 on both the one-meter and three-meter boards, she was a four-time All-PAC performer, earning First Team honors from 2013 to 2015. Chatham’s record holder for the 11-dive, three-meter program, Kianna claimed the conference’s one-meter title in 2013. She has also served as a junior varsity cheerleading coach at Gateway High School.

A four-time Fall PAC Academic Honor Roll designee, Liz graduated from Chatham after just three and a half years on campus. Chatham’s starting goalkeeper for four seasons, she led the league, and finished among the top 50 of all NCAA Division III counterparts, in total saves in each of those four seasons. A two-year soccer representative on the University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), she served as the SAAC Vice President last year. She coordinated many community service/outreach projects through her work with SAAC, which included the Roar for the Cure, a fundraiser benefiting the Jimmy V Foundation, a Candy Gram fundraiser to benefit cancer research and organizing SAAC’s participation in Chatham’s annual Relay for Life event. Liz has served as an instructor at Chatham’s Music and Arts Day Camp, volunteered as a mechanic at the Chatham Bike Works, assisted with local YMCA soccer clinics and worked as a volunteer girls coach with the Arsenal Football Club of Pa. She has also participated in the Maine Cancer Foundation’s Tri for a CURE, an annual all-women’s triathlon based in South Portland.

Anna has been listed on the Dean’s List following every semester of her Geneva career. She has also been recognized on the PAC Academic Honor Roll seven times as a member of the cross country and track and field programs. When she is not training, in class or studying, Anna has assumed a significant leadership role with the cross country program. As a team leader and cross country captain, she regularly invites her teammates to her home for their weekly Bible study. Anna raced to a first-place finish in the 5,000 at the 2014 PAC Indoor Championships and posted back-to-back fifth-place finishes in the steeplechase at the 2014 and 2015 PAC Outdoor Championships.

Josh has earned a spot on the PAC Academic Honor Roll six times and has been recognized on Geneva’s Dean’s List on seven occasions. A school record setter as a member of both the football and track and field programs, he established Geneva’s career kickoff return yards record, the indoor record in the 60 and 200 and is a member of the record-setting outdoor 4x100 and 4x200 relays. In February 2015 Josh was honored for his academic success and community involvement as a PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Month. He has served as the President of Geneva’s Accounting Club and of Golden Tornado Outreach, the College’s football charity organization. He is active with the school’s Business Club and serves as the football program’s representative on the leadership team of the College’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) group. He is a member of the Delta Mu Delta honorary and serves as the treasurer for Geneva’s Becker CPA Review organization. Josh has also served as the site coordinator for Geneva’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a program designed to provide aid for families with basic returns and aimed at those with low income and the elderly within the Beaver Falls community.

Emily Rabenold

Emily is a three-year letter winner in track and field and a two-year cross country letter winner. In November, she became the third Division III All-American in program history by placing 28th at the NCAA Championships in Mason, Ohio. She is a two-time conference Most Valuable Performer in cross country and also earned All-Mideast Region recognition in both 2013 and 2014. She recently repeated as the conference’s Most Valuable Performer in outdoor track and field after recording three individual victories at the PAC Championships, winning the steeplechase, the 5,000 and the 10,000 in helping Grove City to its second-straight conference title. Last year, she placed 15th in the steeplechase at the Division III Championships in Delaware, Ohio. In February, Emily earned indoor track and field MVP honors at the inaugural indoor conference championships in Youngstown, Ohio. She won the mile and 5000, helping Grove City win the team title. She owns the school outdoor record in the steeplechase and the 10,000. She also holds indoor records in the mile, 3,000 and 5,000. Emily earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition in 2014 and has been named to the Dean’s List and the conference’s Academic Honor Roll. Earlier this month, Emily was selected as Grove City’s Omicron Delta Kappa Sportswoman of the Year, becoming just the second junior to earn the honor.
Peter Riley

Peter earned PAC Player of the Year honors for the third time in his career at this year’s conference championships. He won titles at first singles and first doubles while helping Grove City earn its 25th consecutive conference title. He also earned the league’s Player of the Year award in 2012 and 2014 after winning the conference’s No. 1 singles title in those seasons. He also captured conference titles at first doubles in 2012 and 2014. This year, he owns a 10-3 record at first singles and a 10-4 mark in the No. 1 doubles slot. For his career, he is 44-10 in singles play and 48-17 in doubles action. Peter earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition from the region’s sports information directors in 2014 and again in 2015. He has earned Dean’s List honors as well as placement on the conference’s Academic Honor Roll. He has also received the College’s “Scholar Athlete” award and was selected as Grove City’s Omicron Delta Kappa Sportsman of the Year earlier this month.

Carly was selected as a recipient of the Kristen Zawacki Award at Saint Vincent’s Senior Athlete Awards Banquet in April. The award, presented annually by the athletic department to excellent student-athletes who demonstrate service to the Saint Vincent community, is named in memory of the late Saint Vincent women’s basketball and softball coach, Kristen Zawacki. She was also honored as the YWCA Westmoreland County Sports Woman of the Year (Individual Excellence) this spring. Carly was one of the top runners on Saint Vincent’s cross country team and served as team captain last fall. Off the course, she has been involved with Saint Vincent’s Office of Admissions, working as a student ambassador on campus, and Student Government Association (SGA), serving as the organization’s Vice President. She was also a Co-President of the Saint Vincent Education Club and served as a representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Carly was a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta and Kappa Delta Pi honor societies, the PAC Academic Honor Roll and helped the Bearcats earn NCAA Division III All-Academic Team recognition last fall from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Named to Saint Vincent’s annual Homecoming court last October, Carly was crowned Homecoming Queen.
Zach Ligus

In April, Zach won the 41st Annual President’s Award, Saint Vincent’s highest student honor, which is presented to the member of the graduating class who best embodies what the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college values in its students – outstanding academic achievement, student leadership and community service. The same day, he was selected as a recipient of the William Rafferty Award at Saint Vincent’s Senior Athlete Awards Banquet. The Rafferty Award is presented annually by the athletic department to outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in both athletics and academics. Zach set school records in 10 different events as a member of the Bearcat swimming and diving team, including five individual events and all five relay events. Looked upon as a team leader, he served as the team captain last winter. Zach challenged himself academically, majoring in biochemistry while pursuing minors in biology, chemistry, mathematics and theology. He also completed service trips to Haiti in 2014 and 2015, served as committee chair for Saint Vincent’s Relay for Life events in 2012 and 2013 and worked as a member of the Service Corps for Exceptional Children from 2011 to 2013. Zach was recently named as a member of this year’s Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team.

Danielle earned Thiel’s Dean’s Key as an eight-time Dean’s List honoree and was a senior class valedictorian. A member of the Alpha Chi, Sigma Alpha Pi, Psi Chi and Lambda Sigma honor societies, she was named a Thiel Student of the Month in May 2015 and was selected as a PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Month in March 2014. Danielle was a Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America selection in 2014 and was recently named to the 2015 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, garnering consideration for Academic All-America status for a second-consecutive year. The senior catcher hit .375 in 2015, which tied her for the fifth-best average in the PAC, and finished second on the team with 36 hits and 18 RBIs. A four-time All-PAC First Team selection and three-time All-Region honoree, Danielle became the program’s career leader in hits (185) and runs scored (115) in 2015. A member of Thiel’s Equestrian Club, she has also volunteered in the Greenville community at Stray Haven Animal Shelter. Danielle also serves in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
Nic Jones
Franklin, Pennsylvania

Major: Early Childhood/Special Education
Sport: Track & Field

Nic earned the Dean’s Key, awarded to students who earn Dean’s List honors during all eight semesters at Thiel. A member of the Lambda Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi and Les Lauriers honor societies, he was one of Thiel’s Students of the Month in March 2015 and was named a PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Month in March 2014. He was the senior class Vice President, served on the senior class gift committee and is a member of the College’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) organization. A three-time team captain, Nic has earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors three times. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Performer at the 2014 PAC Indoor Championships after winning titles in the high jump and long jump and finishing second in the triple jump. He was also named the Field MVP at the 2014 PAC Outdoor Championships after finishing first in the high jump and second in the long and triple jumps. He earned All-America honors at the 2014 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships with a fourth-place finish in the high jump, and was 10th in the high jump at the 2014 Division III Outdoor Championships. Nic claimed a pair of titles at this year’s PAC Outdoor Championships, winning the triple jump and the high jump.

Catie Luck

Major: Physics
Sport: Softball

Named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll following each of her four seasons with the Saints’ softball program, Catie was recently selected as a member of the Capital One Academic All-District II Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), for her combined performances athletically and in the classroom. By virtue of making the Academic All-District Team, she advances to the Academic All-America Team ballot. Following her graduation from Thomas More, she will attend the University of Buffalo on scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in physics. A three-time team captain, Catie was recognized as a Second Team All-PAC selection this season. She hit .248 with two home runs, two triples, seven doubles, 16 RBIs and 26 runs scored. The Saints finished the season with a 27-17 record, including a 13-5 mark in the PAC. They earned a share of the PAC regular-season title and won their second PAC Championship Tournament title in the past three seasons, advancing to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship. A volunteer with the Brighton Center, Special Olympics and the Ronald McDonald House, Catie has served as a judge at the Science and Engineering Fair of Northern Kentucky for the past two years. She is a member of the Mathematics and Physics Club at Thomas More.
Jake Plummer
North Olmsted, Ohio
Hearts for Jesus Christ, Corpus Christi Academy

Sport: Soccer

Jake, a 2014 captain of Thomas More’s men’s soccer team, was named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll following each of his four seasons with the Saints. He was voted an All-PAC First Team selection following the 2012 and 2013 seasons and was a member of four-straight PAC Championship Tournament title-winning teams. He also earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District II Men’s Soccer First Team following the 2013 season. On campus Jake has served as the President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and as Vice President of the Mathematics and Physics Club. He has worked as a tutor in the Mathematics and Physics departments and as a laboratory assistant in the Physics department. He also completed an internship with Beckett Gas, Inc., a manufacturer of gas combustion products and components. Jake is very active in the local community, serving as a youth soccer coach and as a Special Olympics volunteer working with its bowling program. He has also assisted with the St. Clarence Church Youth Ministry, volunteered at the Bank of Kentucky Observatory and has served as a judge at the Science and Engineering Fair of Northern Kentucky.

Valerie Dunlap

Sport: Basketball

Valerie was voted W&J’s first Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American in women’s basketball program history as a senior. On the court, she was the only student-athlete in the league, male or female, to average a double-double last year, finishing the season averaging 11.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game for the Presidents. A three-time All-PAC award winner and two-time Second Team selection, she finished the season with a PAC-best 12 double-doubles. She has been recognized as an Alpha Scholar, W&J’s highest academic honor, on three occasions. As a W&J Magellan Scholar, Valerie spent last summer in Germany as a finance intern at Kennametal, Inc. conducting research on current German opinion of the Euro. She also participated in an internship with the PAC during the Spring 2014 semester. On campus, she has served in various roles within the College’s Office of Residence Life and worked as a German language peer-assisted learning tutor. She is active with W&J’s Get Involved in the Volunteer Experience (G.I.V.E.) Club and has participated as a member of W&J’s Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Global Investment Research Challenge team. Valerie was recently selected as just one of 13 recipients of the NCAA’s Women’s Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics.
John Wanner
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Major: Accounting
Sport: Football

John was named a 2014 semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which honors the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. He earned membership to the National Football Foundation’s (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society in April and is a two-time Capital One/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team selection. A three-year starter for the Presidents, John earned All-America honors from D3football.com after picking up First Team All-Region, Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South and All-PAC First Team accolades last season. John anchored the offensive line of a unit that shattered the school record for plays in a season (1,029) and averaged 504.3 yards of total offense and 41.5 points per game. He started all 12 games in 2014, helping W&J advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship after capturing the program’s 24th league title.

Sport: Basketball

A four-year member of the basketball program, Hayden emerged as one of the PAC’s top shooters as a junior. That season she led the conference in three-point shooting percentage and paced the Yellow Jackets in free throw shooting percentage. She was rewarded for her efforts as a Second Team All-PAC honoree as a junior before receiving Honorable Mention recognition as a senior. She has been a member of Waynesburg’s Dean’s List every semester since arriving on campus and is a four-time member of the PAC Spring Academic Honor Roll. Hayden was honored with the Outstanding Senior Award for Athletic Training and has served two years as Vice President of the Athletic Training Student Association. She also served as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) representative, worked with the Operation Christmas child’s shoe box project, assembled care packages for members of the United States military and was active with Angel Tree Ministries and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Hayden has volunteered with the Marine Corps Marathon, the Pittsburgh Marathon and with Waynesburg head men’s basketball coach Mark Christner’s annual youth basketball skills camp.
Jacob Fleegle
Jennerstown, Pennsylvania

Major: History/Secondary Education
Sport: Basketball

Since arriving at Waynesburg prior to the 2011-12 academic year, Jacob has been both an athletic and academic standout. A four-year starter with the basketball program, he totaled 1,070 career points and was honored as a Second Team All-PAC selection following his senior season. He has also been recognized as a PAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and spent two years with the golf program. In the classroom, he is an eight-time member of Waynesburg’s Dean’s List. He is also a three-time member of the PAC Academic Honor Roll and was lauded as a member of the 2015 Capital One NCAA Division III Academic All-District IV Men’s Basketball Team. He has been an active member of the Waynesburg community, serving as the President of the University’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) organization and is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education honor society.

Jenny was recognized on Westminster’s Dean’s List and the PAC Academic Honor Roll in each of her eight semesters at the College. She was also honored as a PAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month in October 2014. A four-year letter winner in both cross country and track and field, she is a four-time All-PAC Second Team honoree in cross country, an All-PAC Second Team performer in both indoor and outdoor track and field as a junior and an All-PAC Honorable Mention performer in indoor track and field as a senior. She received the Marjorie A. Walker award at the 12th Annual WESPY Awards (Westminster Exceptional Sports Performances of the Year) earlier this month, which is given annually to honor and acknowledge individuals who best exemplify the qualities of fairness, sportsmanship, leadership, determination, and competitiveness. A multiple SAAC Athlete of the Week selection, Jenny holds school indoor records in the 3,000 and 5,000. She is a three-year member of Westminster’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving two years as the organization’s secretary, and is also a member of the Student Government Association (SGA), where she worked as the group’s secretary. A Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) leader on campus, Jenny has also served as a writer and copy editor for The Holcad, Westminster’s weekly student newspaper. She has served as President of the Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Sigma Pi honor societies and also held membership in the Sigma Tau Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Gamma Delta honoraries. A teacher’s assistant in Westminster’s first-year writing course, she was honored as the Theta Chi “Sweetheart” on campus and has performed the National Anthem at numerous College events.

Mark served as Vice President of the Pi Sigma Alpha honor society and was also a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Delta Pi honoraries. He received Westminster’s Male Senior Scholar Athlete Award at the 12th Annual WESPY Awards (Westminster Exceptional Sports Performances of the Year) earlier this month. A four-year member of the tennis program, and team co-captain during his senior season, he was named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll and earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete status in each of his four years. Mark was involved with Westminster’s Student Government Association (SGA), aiding the Financial Committee and chairing the Diversity Committee. Selected as the lone student representative on the College’s Planning, Budget, and Institutional Review Committee during the 2012-13 academic year, he also chaired the Fundraising Committee of the Student Alumni Association. Fluent in Spanish and proficient in Mandarin Chinese, Mark has traveled abroad for foreign study trips to Kiev, Ukraine, Shanghai, China and Moscow, Russia.
