(pacathletics.org) – Westminster College claimed the 2013 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament title Saturday afternoon after earning four singles flight championships and one doubles flight title. The two-day event, hosted at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa., was the conference’s 29th annual league championship. The Titans finished with 54 total team points, edging second-place Grove City College (48) by just six points. Westminster carried a four-point advantage into Saturday’s second and final day of competition. Geneva College secured the program’s highest-ever finish at the league championship tournament, finishing third with 24 points. Saint Vincent College was fourth with 22 points, followed by Waynesburg University in fifth with 20 points. Washington & Jefferson College finished in sixth place with 16 points, followed by Thomas More College in seventh with 13 points. Thiel College finished eighth (9 pts.), Chatham University ninth (1 pt.) and Bethany College 10th (0 pts.). With Saturday’s PAC team title, Westminster has earned the league’s automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship, scheduled for May 19-24. Westminster senior Caitie Hosler (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central), the event’s number one seed at first singles, was tabbed the league’s Player of the Year after posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory over third-seeded Caroline McGuire (Shorewood, Wis./Dominican) of Grove City in the championship final. Westminster’s 14th-year head coach, Scott Renninger, was voted the PAC’s Coach of the Year, while W&J was voted the conference’s Team Sportsmanship Award winner. Westminster freshman Mariah Turiano (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg), the number one seed at second singles, defeated second-seeded sophomore Karolina Lagerquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Homeschooled) of Grove City 6-4, 6-1 in the flight’s championship match. Titan freshman Sydney Sterner (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny), the top seed at third singles, defeated third-seeded sophomore Kendra Tetrick (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) of Grove City 6-2, 6-3 in the flight’s championship match. Westminster senior Heather Santa (Butler, Pa./Butler), the number two seed at fourth singles, posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over fifth-seeded senior Christine Bullock (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional) of Geneva in the flight’s title match. Sterner and freshman Maria Pallone (New Kensington, Pa./Valley), the number two seed at third doubles, defeated Geneva’s top-seeded duo of senior Brittany Kress (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa) and senior Courtney Light (Lebanon, Pa./Northern Lebanon) 8-1 in the flight championship match. Grove City freshman Linnea Peters (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), the number one seed at fifth singles, defeated Geneva’s second-seeded Kress 6-2, 6-2 in the flight championship. Grove City junior Leah White (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), the second seed at sixth singles, posted 6-4, 6-0 victory over top-seeded Christijana Vucenovic (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) of Westminster in the flight’s title match. Grove City’s McGuire and Lagerquist, the top seed in the number one doubles flight, secured a doubles title after registering an 8-5 victory over Westminster’s Hosler and Turiano in the flight’s championship match. Grove City’s fourth-seeded duo of Tetrick and Peters defeated Westminster’s third-seeded pairing of Santa and junior Lauren Fling (Norton, Ohio/Norton) 8-4 to earn the number two doubles title.
