Personalities of the PAC – Ashley Davis (Geneva College)

The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) is thrilled to participate in the third annual Division III Week – a celebration of the division’s unique philosophy that equally values academics, athletics and student-athletes’ involvement in a full and rich campus life. Division III Week provides an opportunity for all individuals associated with a Division III institution or conference to recognize the powerful impact of athletics and student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community.

Looking back on the past four years at Geneva, it is easy for me to answer the question "Why Division III?" There are a number of reasons I am thankful to be a Division III student-athlete. Growing up, I was involved in many different sports, often jumping right from one season to the next. Division III has allowed me to play both volleyball and softball without conflict. I have enjoyed participating in both because I have formed many new friendships, and to be honest, I might have just been bored only playing one. Different experiences with the two teams have played a huge role in shaping my college career.

Division III also places a high priority on academics and involvement in extracurricular activities. I’ve been able to pursue a business career without limits. I was given the opportunity to have a financial internship last summer and over winter break. Playing Division III sports has also allowed me to be a ball girl for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In Division III, playing on a team involves so much more than practices and games. I’ve toured Camden Yards, Washington, D.C., and have gone to the beach multiple times, all on road trips for volleyball and softball. Participating in Division III sports has allowed me to experience collegiate athletics in ways I never imagined.

Another great thing about Division III is the small, family atmosphere. Because most of the games are relatively close to Geneva, my family has been able to attend. On both the volleyball and softball teams, parents are very involved, often joining us for post-game team meals and staying at the same hotel on overnight trips. It has been enjoyable getting to know other families.

Another great aspect of Division III is that other athletic teams and students on campus are constantly supporting one another. Our gym was packed with students during the PAC Championship volleyball match in 2012 and Senior Night this year. At Geneva, we like to celebrate everyone's successes.

When I reflect on the last four years, the greatest memories are somehow connected to volleyball and softball, whether it is with teammates, on road trips, or specific games. Division III has been a perfect fit for me. Playing volleyball and softball has definitely been a commitment, but it is one well worth it.
