PAC SAAC Scholar-Athletes of the Month (April 2013)


Each month the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member institutions nominate student-athletes for Scholar-Athlete of the Month consideration based on academic and athletic accomplishments. Honorees must be a varsity member in their respective sport(s) and in their junior or senior year. Scholar-Athletes of the Month must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be actively involved within his or her campus community.

A four-year letter winning goalkeeper for the W&J women’s lacrosse program, McLellan has started 64 games throughout her career. She established a single-season school goal against average record in 2012 (7.64) and owns W&J records for career wins (42) and career saves (534). McLellan finished with a 42-22 career record, posting at least 12 wins during each of first three seasons. She also set a Presidents' record for single-season saves with 138 during her freshman campaign.

On campus McLellan has served as the director of the College’s “Up ‘til Dawn” program, an annual campaign created to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, recognized around the world for its research and treatment of children with cancer. The group organizes students into teams to write letters asking for donations to the hospital, which are then collected throughout the year. W&J has raised more than $45,000 in funds since 2008.

McLellan has also served as an executive board member of Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honorary for students who have succeeded in maintaining a 3.5 or higher grade-point average and are in the top 20 percent of their class during their initial year of enrollment, and as secretary for the College’s Phi Sigma society, a national honorary devoted to the promotion of research and academic excellence in the biological sciences.

She is also an active member in Pi Gamma Mu, the nation’s oldest and preeminent honorary in the social sciences, and has served as a resident assistant on campus.

A cell/molecular biology major also pursuing a minor in history, McLellan maintains a 3.646 grade-point average.

Saint Vincent’s career hits leader, Burkhardt currently has 200 hits going into this weekend’s PAC Baseball Championship Tournament. He is hitting .313 (40-for-128) this spring with 10 doubles, two home runs and one triple. The shortstop has scored 21 runs while collecting 18 runs batted in.

On May 2 he was honored with his second-straight Capital One Academic All-District® IV first team selection, advancing to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot to be selected later this month.

Burkhardt has volunteered at The Union Mission in Latrobe, Pa. and has also assisted local senior citizens with yard work and daily tasks around their homes. He has also served as a volunteer instructor at numerous local baseball clinics.

On campus Burkhardt was able to present his senior project at the College’s annual academic conference and in turn implement the program, which enables Saint Vincent computer science students to have remote access to its computer labs.

A computer and information science major maintaining a 3.76 grade-point average, he was the 2013 recipient of the Fr. Jerome J. Rupprecht Award, presented annually to the most outstanding player on the Saint Vincent baseball team.
