Waynesburg edges W&J for second-straight PAC wrestling title

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (pacathletics.org) – Waynesburg University posted three individual champions, three runners-up and three third-place finishers to earn it second-straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) team title Saturday afternoon at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The conference title is Waynesburg’s sixth.

This year’s league championships featured double-elimination brackets with each school having the opportunity to enter up to two student-athletes in each of the 10 weight classes.

The Yellow Jackets totaled 107.50 points in the four-team field, edging runner-up Washington & Jefferson College by just eight points (99.50) for the top spot. W&J registered an event-best four individual title winners, its highest total since finishing with four champions in 2014.

Thomas More College finished third with 66.50 points and was followed by Thiel College in fourth (48.50).

Waynesburg sophomore Ken Burrs (Hagerstown, Md. | North Hagerstown) was voted the league's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Burrs registered a pair of pinfall victories before posting a 14-6 major decision victory over W&J senior William Oberschelp (McMurray, Pa. | Peters Township) in the championship match. Saturday's PAC title was Burrs' second straight. 

Waynesburg 10th-year head coach Ron Headlee was voted the PAC’s Coach of the Year. The Coach of the Year award was Headlee’s sixth.

All four programs will represent the PAC in this year’s Division III Regional Championships. Thomas More, W&J and Waynesburg will participate in the Central Regional Championship on Friday-Saturday, February 23-24 at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Thiel will participate in the Southeast Regional Championships on Feb. 23-24, which are being hosted by Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia.
