Grove City nets PAC women’s tennis title 10/20/2018 8:56:30 PM GREENSBURG, Pa. (pacathletics.org)--Grove City College, the top seed in this year’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament, rolled to a 5-1 championship match victory over third-seeded Westminster College to claim the league title Saturday evening at the Greensburg Racquet Club. Weather concerns Saturday forced the final two matches of the championship tournament away from Washington & Jefferson College’s Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center in Washington, Pennsylvania – where Friday’s semifinal matches were held – to the Greensburg Racquet Club. This year’s championship tournament featured the implementation of a team bracket format for the first time. The PAC had sponsored a flighted championship, with individual players and doubles pairings exclusively seeded and not based on a team’s regular season finish, since initially sponsoring a championship event during the 1985-86 academic year. The conference title is Grove City’s fourth in the past five years. The Wolverines have registered a PAC-best 30 championships. Grove City College (12-0) earned wins at second and third doubles to seize a 2-1 lead going into singles play. Senior Rachel Ford (Harrison City, Pa. | Penn-Trafford) claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win over Westminster (8-5) first-year Sara Small (Beaver, Pa. | Beaver) at fifth singles before sophomore Morgan Happe (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Mount Lebanon) posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over junior Margo Mason (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Chartiers Valley) at first singles. Grove City senior Maggie Manchester (Williamsport, Pa. | Williamsport) was named the championship tournament’s most outstanding player after recording Saturday’s match-clinching decision. During this year’s tournament she partnered with sophomore Madi Reed (Dallastown, Pa. | Dallastown) for three wins at number two doubles while also logging three wins at the second singles position. Washington & Jefferson College (10-6), the championship tournament’s number two seed, downed fourth-seeded Geneva College (8-6) by a 5-2 score in today’s third-place match. Junior Caitlin Shellhamer's (Birdsboro, Pa. | Daniel Boone) 6-0, 6-1 victory at sixth singles secured the win for the Presidents. With this year’s team title, Grove City has secured the PAC’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. Team selections for the Division III Championships will be announced on Monday, May 6 with preliminary rounds scheduled for Friday-Saturday, May 10-12.
