Women's Fall Championship Results

VIENNA, Ohio (pacathletics.org) –  Thomas More College will carry a 13-stroke lead into the spring portion of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Golf Championship after rounds of 359 and 364 at this year’s 36-hole fall championship.

The PAC Fall Championships were hosted at Avalon Golf and Country Club. The women’s teams played Monday’s and Tuesday’s rounds at Avalon at Squaw Creek.

Thomas More’s two-round team score of 723 is a 55 stroke improvement on their finish at last year’s fall championship (778), where they claimed a third-place finish heading into the spring event. The Saints would eventually finish as the runners-up in last year’s title race. Sophomore Emily Armbrecht (Taylor Mill, Ky. / Holy Cross) finished fifth in the 33-player fall event with a 178 (88-90).

Saint Vincent College is currently second after a two-day total of 736 (370-366) while last year’s league champion, Washington & Jefferson College, sits in third (369-373-742).

Westminster College is fourth (377-367-744) and is followed by Grove City College in fifth (387-409-796), Thiel College in sixth (509-495-1004) and Waynesburg University in seventh (649-642-1291).

The PAC Championships feature a 72-hole stroke play event, with 36 holes played at the Fall Championships and another 36 holes played at the Spring Championships in April. The combined 72-hole team total determines the PAC team champions and winners of the league's automatic qualifying bids to the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships. The All-PAC teams, as well the PAC Players of the Year, are determined by the combined 72-hole scores from the Fall and Spring Championships.

W&J junior Kaitlyn Vogel (Pleasant Gap, Pa. / Bellefonte Area) led wire-to-wire to earn medalist honors at the fall championship with back-to-back rounds of 86 (172). Vogel finished fourth at last year’s championship.

Saint Vincent senior Samm Firestone (Pen Argyl, Pa. / Pen Argyl) and Westminster junior Kelsey Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) are tied for second (173). Firestone followed up Monday’s 95 with a tournament-low round of 81 on Tuesday, while Phillips posted an 88 Monday and an 85 Tuesday.

This year’s PAC Spring Championships will be played at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania on Friday-Saturday, April 28-29.
