VIENNA, Ohio (pacathletics.org) – The Washington & Jefferson College men and Thomas More College women lead after Monday’s respective opening rounds of the 2016-17 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Golf Championships at Avalon Golf and Country Club.

The men are playing at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio, while the women are competing at Avalon at Squaw Creek in Vienna, Ohio. Tuesday’s rounds are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.

The PAC Championships feature a 72-hole stroke play event, with 36 holes played at the Fall Championships and another 36 holes played at the Spring Championships in April. The combined 72-hole team total determines the PAC team champions and winners of the league's automatic qualifying bids to the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships. The All-PAC teams, as well the PAC Players of the Year, are determined by the combined 72-hole scores from the Fall and Spring Championships.

The W&J men own a five-stroke lead (296-301) over Thomas More after Monday’s opening round. The Saints finished fourth at last year’s PAC Championships while the Presidents were fifth. Saint Vincent College sits in third (302) while Westminster College (308) is fourth. Last year’s league champion, Grove City College, is currently fifth (313) and is followed by Thiel College (329), Bethany College (430) and Waynesburg University (434).

W&J freshman Jake Darr (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) is leading at the midway point of the 36-hole Fall Championship after carding a two-under 70. Thomas More senior Jimmy Kelley (California, Ky. / Bishop Brossart), Saint Vincent sophomore Nate Yackovich (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) and Grove City sophomore Cole McCook (Chester Springs, Pa./ Downingtown STEM Academy) are tied for second after each shot an opening round one-under 71.

The Thomas More women hold a 10-stroke advantage over W&J (359-369) heading into Tuesday’s second round. Thomas More finished as the runner-up at last year’s PAC Championships while W&J captured the conference title. Saint Vincent is currently third (370) and is followed by Westminster in fourth (377), Grove City in fifth (387), Thiel in sixth (509) and Waynesburg in seventh (649).

W&J junior Kaitlyn Vogel (Pleasant Gap, Pa. / Bellefonte Area) leads the 33-player field after scoring an opening-round 86 Monday. Vogel finished fourth a year ago. Thomas More sophomore Sara Jackie (Louisville, Ky. / Sacred Heart Academy) is second after carding an 86. Thomas More sophomore Emily Armbrecht (Taylor Mill, Ky. / Holy Cross), Saint Vincent senior Liz Loftus (Harrisburg, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) and Westminster junior Kelsey Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) are tied for third after each scored an opening-round 88.

This year’s PAC Spring Golf Championships will be played at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania on Friday-Saturday, April 28-29.
