Thiel claims 2014-15 PAC wrestling crown

WASHINGTON, Pa. (pacathletics.org) – The Thiel College wrestling program finished with four individual champions to claim the 2014-15 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Wrestling Championship Friday evening at Washington & Jefferson College’s Henry Memorial Center.

The league title is Thiel’s 21st overall and first since the 2011-12 season.

Thiel finished with 106.5 points to edge host W&J, who totaled 93.5 points. Waynesburg University, the conference champions in 2013 and 2014, finished third with 93 points.

Thiel senior 174-pound Jordan Powell (Hadley, Pa./Commodore Perry) captured PAC Wrestler of the Year honors, while Tomcat 12th-year head coach Craig Thurber was named the league’s Coach of the Year. The coach of the year honor is Thurber’s seventh.

W&J and fourth-year head coach Tommy Prairie were recognized as the PAC’s Team Sportsmanship Award winner.

Powell posted a 4-0 decision over Waynesburg sophomore Ryan Shank (South Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) before posting a win by fall (5:51) over W&J sophomore Sonnieboy Blanco (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) in the championship round. The conference title is Powell’s third-straight (won at 174 in 2014 and 165 in 2013).

Waynesburg senior Luke Lohr (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) earned his fourth PAC title at 149 pounds, posting a win by fall (4:14) over Thiel senior Nick Hart (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) in the first round and a 17-6 major decision victory over W&J junior Trevor Meyers (Saint Thomas, Pa./James Buchanon) in the title round. Lohr won titles at 149 in 2011, 2013 and 2014.

W&J junior Jacob Spearman (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) secured his third-straight league title with at win in the 133-pound weight class. He won back-to-back titles at 125 pounds in 2013 and 2014. Spearman earned a 12-4 major decision win over Thiel junior Lance Walters (Abingdon, Md./John Carroll) in the first round and a 5-4 decision over Waynesburg sophomore Filippo Crivelli (Clinton, Pa./Hopewell) in the championship round.

All three programs will represent the PAC at the 2015 NCAA® Division III Mideast Regional Championships on Sunday, March 1 at the Sollenberger Sports Center in Grantham, Pa. The Mideast Regional Championships are being hosted by Messiah College.
