Saint Vincent men capture fifth-straight PAC cross country title

BETHANY, W.Va. (pacathletics.org) – Saint Vincent College placed five runners in the top 10 of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Men’s Cross Country Championship Saturday morning, earning the program’s fifth-straight team title.

The league's 57th annual cross country championship was hosted by Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va.

The Bearcats and 12th-year head coach Dr. Andrew Herr totaled 31 team points to claim this year’s league crown. Grove City College was second (40 pts.), Waynesburg University third (85), Thiel College fourth (140), Thomas More College fifth (149), Westminster College sixth (154), Geneva College seventh (175) and host Bethany College eighth (211). Washington & Jefferson College competed in the event as individuals only.

Saint Vincent sophomore Brandon Moretton (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) earned the event's individual title and 2014 PAC Men's Cross Country MVP honors after posting a winning time of 26:40.40. Moretton finished 12th (27:05.70) at last year’s conference championship.

Herr was named the league’s coach of the year for the fifth-straight year.

Grove City sophomore Daniel Christiansen (Frederick, Md./Frederick) finished second with a time of 36:42.7, following Saint Vincent junior Sawyer Palonder (Perryopolis, Pa./Frazier) in third (26:52.40). Waynesburg sophomore Brendan Keany (Buffalo, N.Y./East Aurora) was fourth (26:58.90) followed by Grove City senior Peter Christiansen (Frederick, Md./Broadfording Christian) in fifth (27:02.30).

Bethany as the winner of the PAC's Team Sportsmanship Award in a vote of league coaches.

The top seven finishers in Saturday’s eight-kilometer championship race receive All-PAC first team recognition, while runners placing eighth through 14th earn All-PAC second team honors. Runners finishing 15th through 21st claim honorable mention recognition.

Eight PAC programs will participate in the 2014 NCAA® Cross Country Mideast Regional on Saturday, November 15. The Mideast Regional, being hosted by Dickinson College, will be held at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa. The men's eight-kilometer event will get underway at 11 a.m.

The 2014 NCAA® Championship is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Golf Center at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio. The national championship is being hosted by Wilmington College and the Warren County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The men's eight-kilometer event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
