(pacathletics.org) – Grove City College overcame a two-point deficit following Friday’s quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the 2014 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Women’s Tennis Championships to edge defending league champion Westminster College by just one point in the final team standings. Grove City finished with 52 total team points while Westminster combined for 51. The league's two-day championship tournament was held for the 13th-straight year at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa. The conference championship is Grove City’s 27th in women’s tennis and first since 2011. As conference champion, Grove City receives the league’s automatic berth in the 2015 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, which will be held in May. Saint Vincent College finished third (33), followed by Washington & Jefferson College in fourth (25), Geneva College in fifth (16), Waynesburg University in sixth (12), Thomas More College in seventh (8), Thiel College in eighth (7) and Bethany College in ninth (3). The Wolverines captured a total of five flight championships, one runner-up finish and three third-place finishes. Grove City senior Caroline McGuire (Shorewood, Wis./Dominican) captured the conference's Player of the Year award after winning the league title at number one singles. McGuire, the flight’s top seed, defeated the number three seed, Saint Vincent junior Jackii Hauser (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic), in the title match 6-1, 6-0. The PAC Player of the Year award is McGuire’s second. She also claimed the honor in 2012. Grove City third-year head coach Jeff Buxton earned the league's Coach of the Year award, his first with the women’s program. Geneva was voted the PAC’s Team Sportsmanship Award winner.
