Thomas More Claims Third-Straight PAC Women’s Soccer Championship Tournament Title

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (pacathletics.org) – The top-seeded Thomas More College women’s soccer program claimed its third-straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament title Friday afternoon at The Bank of Kentucky Field with its 1-0 victory over second-seeded Grove City College.

The tournament title for the Saints (17-1-2) is the program’s fourth overall since joining the PAC in 2005. Grove City (11-9-1) was playing in their seventh championship tournament final since its last PAC title in 2001.

With Friday’s championship match win, Thomas More earns the PAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The tournament field and brackets for the NCAA’s championship tournament will be released on the NCAA website (www.ncaa.com) at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11.

The top-seeded Saints and second-seeded Wolverines battled to a scoreless draw through the opening half of the championship match.

Sophomore forward Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) scored the Saints’ game-winner off of a rebound just 1:49 into the second half.  

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Barton (Florence, Ky./Villa Madonna) played all 90 minutes and had one save in the shutout win. The shutout was the Saints' school-record 16th of the season.

Grove City junior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded six saves in 90 minutes of action.

Thomas More finished the match with a 16-2 edge in shots (7-1 shots on goal) and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Second-seeded Grove City (11-8-1) earned a 1-0 win over third-seeded Westminster College (11-7-2) at College Field in Grove City, Pa.

The Wolverines avenged a regular-season loss to Westminster with Tuesday's 1-0 victory. Junior forward Sarah Flenniken (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) headed in the game-winning goal off a free kick from senior midfielder Sarah Cessar (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) at the 59:50 mark. Junior goalkeeper Kristi Lathrop (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) made two saves to earn the shutout and victory.

Westminster sophomore goalie Maddy Frech (Leechburg, PA / Kiski Area) earned a career-high 12 saves in the loss.

Two-time defending league champion Thomas More (16-1-2) registered a 2-0 win over fourth-seeded Saint Vincent College (10-8-1) at The Bank of Kentucky Field in Crestview Hills, Ky..

The Saints took a 1-0 lead at the 24:26 mark on an unassisted goal from freshman forward Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic). Senior midfielder Emily Sanker (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) added an insurance goal at the 60:09 mark, scoring off of junior midfielder Sam Work's (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) corner kick. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Barton (Florence, Ky./Villa Madonna) played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded one save in the shutout win.

Saint Vincent junior midfielder Amie Dobracki (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) recorded SVC's only shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Cassie Overly (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) made six saves in the loss.
