WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. (pacathletics.org) – For the second-straight year, the Saint Vincent College men’s golf team will take a lead into the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Spring Golf Championships. The Bearcats fired a four-player stroke total of 300 in Tuesday’s second and final round of the PAC Fall Golf Invitational for a two-day team total of 588 (288-300) and lead second-place Washington & Jefferson College (604-306-298) by 16 strokes heading into April’s PAC Spring Championships.

Saint Vincent also earned a first-place finish at the 2012 PAC Fall Golf Invitational event before claiming the program’s first-ever conference championship after last April’s PAC Spring Championships.

Saint Vincent’s two-round team score of 588 is the second-lowest posted at a PAC Fall Golf Invitational, just 11 strokes off of W&J’s 577 (285-292) in 2008.

The 40-player PAC Fall Golf Invitational (6,658 yards, par-71) was hosted by Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex, Pa.

The 36-hole PAC Fall Golf Invitational counts for one-half of the 72-hole team total (combined with the 2014 PAC Golf Championship this coming April), which will determine the 2013-14 PAC team champions and the league’s automatic bid for the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Grove City College finished in third place with a two-round score of 608, followed by Thomas More College in fourth (628), Thiel College in fifth (631), Westminster College in sixth (648), Bethany College in seventh (722) and Waynesburg University in eighth (750).

PAC Fall Golf Invitational co-medalist honors went to Saint Vincent senior Derek Lingafelt (Jeannette, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) and Grove City junior Brian Giesler (Harrisville, Pa. / Slippery Rock) after both players carded two-over 144s in the two-day event, marking the first time in the PAC Fall Golf Invitational’s six-year history that a pair of players shared medalist honors.

The 144s recorded by Lingafelt and Giesler are tied for the third-best 36-hole scores at a PAC Fall Golf Invitational.

Lingafelt was tied with Bearcat teammate, junior Tim Barto (Kittanning, Pa. / Kittanning), for the individual lead following Monday’s opening round after both players fired one-under 70s. Lingafelt followed up Monday’s round with a three-over 74 on Tuesday.

Giesler posted a four-over 75 on Monday, but came on strong Tuesday with a two-under 69. His round of 69 is the lowest men’s round registered at a PAC Fall Golf Invitational since Saint Vincent’s Sam Cline posted a three-under 68 in the second round of the 2011 event. Giesler’s 69 also tied the fourth-lowest single-round score at a PAC Fall Golf Invitational.

The 2014 PAC Spring Golf Championships will be held Friday-Saturday, April 25-26 at Cedarbrook Golf Club in Belle Vernon, Pa.
